The Peace Lily is actually what we commonly call the white spathe or white crane plant. From the name “Peace Lily,” we can tell that it symbolizes smoothness, peace, auspiciousness and harmony. Because of its beautiful symbolism, many plant lovers like to keep a few pots of this green houseplant at home. But many plant lovers find that the Peace Lily is actually not as easy to grow as everyone imagines. For example, some plant lovers discover during cultivation that their potted Peace Lily at home develops yellowing leaves, and when faced with this situation, many people feel at a loss and do not know how to eliminate this phenomenon.

When the potted green plants at home show yellowing leaves, we should first calmly and carefully observe, and start from their growth habits, so that we can treat the root cause and restore our beloved potted plants to a normal state. So, let us first learn about the growth habits of the Peace Lily!

The Peace Lily likes a warm, humid and semi-shaded growing environment, and especially needs to avoid strong direct sunlight; in addition, the Peace Lily is not cold-tolerant, and its optimal growing temperature is between 20-28°C. It is particularly worth noting that the temperature for safe overwintering in winter is above 10°C.

Regarding the phenomenon of yellowing leaves in the Peace Lily, combined with the growth habits mentioned above, we can try to solve the yellowing leaf phenomenon from the following aspects.

1. Caused by dry air and insufficient humidity

Cause analysis: Since the Peace Lily is quite sensitive to air humidity, according to its growth humidity requirements, when the surrounding air is dry, its leaves are prone to yellowing and wilting.

Solution: We need to spray water on its leaves or sprinkle water on the surrounding floor space to alleviate it. In addition, we can also take a plastic bag and cover it, but this is not good for ventilation. So, we need to cut several openings all around the plastic bag, otherwise when the light conditions are good, the temperature inside the plastic bag can easily become too high and worsen the yellowing and wilting of the leaves.

2. Caused by root rot due to overwatering

Cause analysis: When we overwater the Peace Lily, this will affect the normal respiration of the plant's root system. Once water accumulates in the pot, it will cause the Peace Lily's roots to have difficulty breathing or poor respiration, leading to root rot, and its leaves will also turn yellow and black.

Solution: Remove the accumulated water in the pot and appropriately add a small amount of slightly moist fine soil. If it is kept indoors, when the indoor temperature is in the low twenties Celsius, it should be watered thoroughly only once every 3-5 days. When watering, pay attention to observing the conditions in the pot to avoid water accumulation.

3. Caused by insufficient nutrients in the potting soil

Cause analysis: Everyone knows that plants usually obtain nutrients from the soil. If too much time passes, the nutrients in the soil will naturally become less and less. If measures are not taken to replenish nutrients in time, the plant in the pot will lack nutritional supplementation. Over time, this will cause the plant to develop yellowing leaves due to nutrient deficiency, and yellowing at the leaf tips is especially likely to occur.

Solution: As we said above, a lack of nutrients in the soil can also easily cause the Peace Lily to develop yellowing leaves. For this situation, we should promptly add nutrients for it. We can solve it by changing the soil. It is recommended that you buy high-nutrient leaf mold, peat soil or multi-element soil to add nutrients to your potted Peace Lily, thereby avoiding yellow leaves caused by long-term fertilizer deficiency.

4. Caused by inappropriate lighting

Cause analysis: The Peace Lily likes bright places, especially in winter, when it needs a relatively good lighting environment. When the sunlight is too strong, it should also be properly shaded and must not be placed in the sun for exposure. Especially in summer, due to changes in the surrounding environment, if the lighting is inappropriate, it can easily cause wilting and yellow leaves, and in severe cases can even lead to death.

Solution: Appropriate lighting is crucial for the potted Peace Lily kept at home. (The original text suggests placing the Peace Lily in a relatively bright indoor spot all year round, where it only needs to receive diffused light.

5. Caused by unsuitable temperature

Cause analysis: Usually, the growing temperature for the Peace Lily is relatively easy to control. This situation generally does not occur easily, but if the ambient temperature around the potted Peace Lily exceeds 5°C-35°C, yellowing leaves are likely to appear.

Solution: When the temperature is too low, especially when the winter temperature is below 5°C, it should be placed in a warm indoor spot. On sunny days, give it sufficient light, which not only helps it grow green again but also helps it overwinter; when the summer temperature is above 35°C, shade measures should be taken or it should be placed in a cool, light-transmitting spot for care.

6. Caused by incorrect fertilizing

Cause analysis: If any plant is fertilized incorrectly during cultivation, it will develop yellowing leaves. Of course, the potted Peace Lily is no exception.

Solution: Fertilizing the Peace Lily must be done in moderation, applying thin fertilizer as much as possible. Concentrated fertilizer or raw fertilizer must not be applied, otherwise it can easily cause yellow leaves and affect its growth. Also, after applying a certain amount of solid fertilizer, you must water, preferably with clean water. However, I still recommend using dilute fertilizer water instead of solid fertilizer and clean water, as this can effectively prevent fertilizer burn and also make the Peace Lily grow lush and flourishing.

7. Caused by pest infestation

Cause analysis: Pests are the natural enemies of most potted plants. If pests such as mites invade the plant in the pot, the leaves of the Peace Lily will show phenomena such as wilting, loss of luster and withered yellowing.

Solution: For the phenomenon of mite pests invading the potted Peace Lily, we can use mite-specific pesticides for spraying and killing, such as dicofol, hexythiazox, pyridaben and other drugs, which can achieve relatively good results in killing mites.
