If a pine has been growing in a pot for too long, its root system becomes tangled and crisscrossed, and the potting soil easily breaks down into powder, seriously hindering aeration and drainage while also reducing water retention. In this case, we need to consider repotting the bonsai. Pines can be repotted in spring and autumn. In spring, it is best done during the early spring period from January to March; in autumn, it is best done during the early autumn period from September to October. Since autumn is close to the dormant period, it is recommended to repot in spring instead.

  1. Withhold water before repotting

Before repotting a pine, water should be withheld for several days in advance to make sure the potting soil is on the dry side at the time of repotting. Also, do not wash the roots when repotting.

  2. Root trimming

Before planting in a new pot, we need to trim the roots of the dug-out pine. When trimming the roots, the movements should be gentle and careful; you cannot do it as casually as when repotting other broadleaf trees. It is advisable to keep some healthy fine roots with strong water-absorbing ability.

  3. Potting process

First, put the prepared new potting soil into the pot, then plant the tree, and cover it with the remaining soil. Next, insert a wooden stick into the soil several times to make sure the potting soil becomes firm with no large gaps. While filling, shake the pot at the same time so that the potting soil and the plant's roots can make as close contact as possible.

  4. Watering after planting

After repotting and planting the pine, water it thoroughly once, continuously. The purpose of this is, on the one hand, to wash away the powdery soil on the roots so it can be carried out with the water flow, and on the other hand, to check whether drainage in the potting soil and at the bottom of the pot is smooth and whether the soil has good permeability.

  5. Placement and care

After watering is completed, the next step is to place it in a suitable location for care and management. Pines like sunlight and have strong drought tolerance, so they should be placed in a sunny spot where they can receive sunlight all day, while maintaining good ventilation and doing daily watering work well.

If the pine being repotted is relatively large, it is recommended to replace the old soil in two sessions, so as to avoid adverse effects on the tree's growth due to repotting. You can replace half of the old soil at the first repotting, then repot again the following year and replace the other half of the old soil at the same time.

But whether the pine is a large tree or a small tree, it is not advisable to fertilize it immediately after repotting. It is best to wait at least 1-2 months until the tree has recovered its growth and stabilized before applying additional fertilizer.
