Friends who love flowers all know that tulips are beautiful. Compared with hyacinths, once you have seen tulips, it is hard to make room in your eyes for hyacinths again. But tulips, like hyacinths, can be grown hydroponically in addition to soil cultivation. However, compared with soil cultivation, it seems everyone prefers hydroponics, after all, hydroponics looks cleaner and tidier!

  1. Disinfecting the Bulbs

Whether growing hydroponically or in soil, newly acquired bulbs should be disinfected and sterilized promptly, especially bulbs just bought online. There are many disinfectants, such as carbendazim, chlorothalonil, potassium permanganate, etc. Just dilute them with water in the right proportion; the soaking time is generally about half an hour.

  2. Suitable Water Depth

Since it is hydroponics, water is naturally indispensable. But when growing tulips hydroponically, the bulbs must not be completely submerged below the water surface. The recommended approach is to fill the container with just enough water to touch the bottom of the bulbs. Of course, when placing the bulbs, note that the pointed end should face upward to encourage sprouting.

  3. Covering for Protection

After arranging the bulbs and filling with water, put a lid on the container, taking care that the lid does not touch the tips of the sprouts. Then place the container in a well-lit spot. Keep the ambient temperature at 8-14°C. Roots and sprouts will appear within about 1 week.

  4. Changing Water and Rotating the Container

Water management during the sprouting stage of tulip bulbs is very important. We need to be ready to observe at the right times to ensure adequate water replenishment. Change the clean water about every 3-4 days; when changing the water, add an appropriate amount of nutrient solution, and change only half the water each time. Changing all the water at once will make the roots unable to adapt for a while, which is very unfavorable for their normal growth. Besides changing the water, to provide more adequate light, better promote photosynthesis and better growth, we also need to rotate the container.

  5. Supplementing Nutrients

After the young tulip plants grow 3-4 leaves, they begin to produce flower buds. During this period, we need to supplement nutrients, mainly boron intake. Because taking in an appropriate amount of boron helps make the flower colors more delicate and lovely after blooming. So we need to supplement boron fertilizer appropriately. The temperature should also be raised to about 17°C, which is more conducive to flower bud formation.

  6. Light Control After Flowering

Tulips can bloom at most one week after the flower buds emerge, but when they first begin to bloom, they should be properly shaded, which can help extend the flowering period. So, to enjoy the flowers longer, it is recommended to move the pot to a shaded place or take appropriate shading measures at this time.

It can be seen that growing tulips hydroponically is quite simple, and compared with soil cultivation it is cleaner and tidier and will not dirty the environment. However, since hydroponically grown bulbs are usually single-use and cannot be reused afterward, everyone should be mentally prepared for this.
