Summer azalea bonsai blooms for a longer period than ordinary azalea bonsai, so the flower-viewing season is also longer. However, sometimes we find that after a summer azalea bonsai enters its flowering period, although quite a few flower buds have appeared, it still never blooms. What is going on here? When a summer azalea bonsai only forms buds but does not bloom, it is generally caused by care and management work that has not been done properly or has been done incorrectly. So, what should be done when a summer azalea has flower buds but does not bloom?

In fact, it does happen from time to time that a summer azalea bonsai only forms buds but does not bloom when its flowering period arrives. The main reason is still that everyone's care and management work for the summer azalea bonsai has not been detailed enough, so although quite a few flower buds can appear, its blooming scene is never seen as expected from beginning to end. Not only that, but when spring arrives and flowers bloom, sometimes the summer azalea is also seen rapidly pushing out new shoots. In fact, we usually call this phenomenon “dead buds”.

Looking into the reasons, the main cause of dead buds in summer azaleas is that in winter people worry the summer azalea will suffer cold damage, so they directly move it indoors for care. For the southern regions in winter, indoor temperatures are often relatively high, and since the summer azalea itself has a certain degree of cold tolerance, when it encounters excessively high indoor temperatures, its branches and leaves grow faster, thus competing for much of the nutrition used for bud formation. As the flowering period approaches, the flower buds develop dead buds due to insufficient nutrients, so naturally the only thing seen is the summer azalea forming buds but not blooming.

For many places in southern China, winter temperatures are often not too low, and the summer azalea itself is also relatively cold-tolerant, so under normal circumstances it can be placed outdoors to let it enter natural dormancy, and it can usually overwinter safely and smoothly. Doing this is mainly to avoid leggy growth of the summer azalea's branches and leaves and to avoid consuming too many nutrients and affecting later blooming. Of course, if it is in the extremely cold regions of northern China in winter, it is often necessary to move the summer azalea bonsai indoors for care before winter arrives and temperatures drop sharply, to prevent it from suffering cold damage.

However, even in southern China, to ensure that the summer azalea can quickly recover its vigor after waking from winter dormancy and store sufficient nutrients for the coming bloom, it is generally necessary to apply a topdressing once before flowering. To promote blooming, the fertilizer should mainly be phosphate fertilizer such as superphosphate, but it needs to be applied in thin doses frequently, so the concentration must be controlled well. When nutrients are sufficient, the summer azalea bonsai will not show the phenomenon of only forming buds but not blooming.

It can be seen that when a summer azalea bonsai only forms buds but does not bloom during its flowering period, it is mainly caused by care and management work in the earlier stage not being done well enough. Among these, the most critical factor is a lack of nutrients. On the one hand, this is because the temperature in the winter care environment is too high, causing the summer azalea not to enter natural dormancy but to continue growing, thus consuming quite a lot of nutrients; on the other hand, before flowering, the summer azalea bonsai did not receive the necessary pruning treatment and timely nutrient supplementation, so under conditions of nutrient deficiency, the plant only forms buds but does not bloom.

In view of this, besides doing all aspects of care and management work well at ordinary times, we especially need to carry out the necessary pruning and topdressing before flowering. At the same time, even if the phenomenon of only forming buds but not blooming occurs, there is no need to be nervous; instead, corresponding measures such as adjusting light and temperature, water and fertilizer, and pruning should be taken promptly to ensure smooth blooming as expected the following year.
