Can Asparagus Fern Be Grown in Water Without Roots? A Detailed Guide to Rootless Hydroponics
Asparagus fern (Asparagus setaceus) is an evergreen plant that grows in a rather quiet and elegant manner, like a lovely young girl showing us her most beautiful side. Moreover, asparagus fern can be grown both in soil and in water, making it a very easy-to-grow climbing plant with high ornamental value. Hydroponic asparagus fern not only keeps the environment cleaner, but its ornamental value is in no way inferior to that of soil-grown asparagus fern. So, can asparagus fern be grown in water without roots?

Many potted flowering plants can be grown in both soil and water, and generally, healthy vigorous branches cut from a soil-grown potted plant can be rooted in water. But asparagus fern cannot be propagated this way; if grown in water without a root system, asparagus fern usually cannot survive. If you want to succeed with hydroponic asparagus fern, you first need to prepare a plant with an intact root system, and then grow it in water.
In other words, if you want to grow it in water, you need to first acclimatise the asparagus fern to soil culture in advance. Although this is soil culture, it does not necessarily mean it has to grow in soil; you can use a glass container filled with expanded clay pebbles, plant the asparagus fern seedling in the pebbles, then add an appropriate amount of water while ensuring good ventilation and bright light. At the same time, note that while the asparagus fern is being acclimatised in this environment, you need to change the water frequently; generally, change the water once every 2-3 days in the early stage, and once every 3-5 days in the later stage.
When asparagus fern is acclimatised in this environment, the original process usually takes about 2 months. Generally, after 2 months you can see the asparagus fern growing tender white roots, and then you can take it out and place it in a glass container filled with clean water for water culture. But to ensure the plant can grow normally in water culture mode, it is recommended to soak the roots in a carbendazim solution for a while before water culture to sterilise and disinfect them; generally, about half an hour is suitable for this process.
After sterilising and disinfecting the roots, take the plant out and let it dry in a cool place for a while; once the roots become soft, you can proceed with water culture. During water culture, changing the water is very important. Generally, change the clean water once every 2-3 days in the early stage, and after 2 weeks you can change the clean water once every 4-5 days. Moreover, the timing and frequency of water changes also need to be adjusted flexibly according to the local temperature environment.
In addition, when changing the water, we also need to add a few drops of nutrient solution to ensure the plant can absorb sufficient nutrients to promote growth. At the same time, you also need to ensure good ventilation, bright light and suitable temperature; this way, the asparagus fern can maintain robust growth in a hydroponic environment.
