The asparagus fern is not only beautiful in shape with a strong sense of layering, but also has a unique temperament, elegant and generous, delicate and tranquil, so it is not only favored by scholars and literati, but also very much loved by the general public. Moreover, besides being grown in soil, the asparagus fern can also be grown in water, with a delicate container arranged for it, making it both dignified and beautiful, noble and elegant. So, can a cut piece of asparagus fern be grown in water?

In fact, although the asparagus fern can be grown hydroponically, it needs to be done under certain conditions. If we casually cut a stem or branch of the asparagus fern and insert it into water, it generally cannot survive. First we must understand that hydroponic growing of the asparagus fern is not the same as that of many other plants; hydroponic growing of other plants can generally be done by cutting a single branch. But the asparagus fern needs to have roots at its base to have any hope of surviving in water.

The asparagus fern can be grown hydroponically, but you cannot directly cut a branch and root it in water; even when grown in water, it usually needs to have its root system, and hydroponic growing with rooted seedlings tends to be easier to succeed. Before growing it in water, you first need to clean the root system of the asparagus fern thoroughly, then trim the roots appropriately, cutting off the old, weak, diseased and damaged roots, and then disinfect and sterilize them before growing hydroponically. If you do not trim the roots before growing it in water, although it may still survive, it will after all affect its normal growth.

Practice has proven that as long as we can master the hydroponic method for the asparagus fern, it is often quite easy to grow it in water. But it is recommended to use small soil-grown asparagus fern seedlings, wash the roots clean with clear water, place them in a glass container and then pour clear water into the container. The water level should be appropriate at 1/3-1/2 of the root system of the asparagus fern, and the entire root system must not be submerged below the water line. This is because this ensures that the root system of the asparagus fern can breathe the dissolved oxygen in the water and at the same time also breathe the oxygen in the air.

After setting up the hydroponic environment for the asparagus fern, we can carry out care according to the standard procedure, generally keeping to changing the clean water once every 2-3 days. If the growing environment is suitable, a hydroponically grown asparagus fern can generally sprout white and tender roots in 3-5 days. At this point the water-changing interval can be kept to once every 5-7 days, and when changing the water, a nutrient solution should be used as well. But the nutrient solution should not be used in too large an amount; just drip in a few drops each time you change the water.
