Reasons Why Desert Rose Only Grows Leaves Without Blooming and How to Fix It
Desert Rose (Adenium obesum) has trumpet-shaped flowers that are extremely showy, while the plant itself is relatively short with a thick, robust, and quaintly rugged trunk, making it a flowering plant of very high ornamental value. However, after many people grow it as a potted houseplant, it only produces branches and leaves without blooming. So, what should you do if your Desert Rose only grows leaves without blooming?

1. Soil
When it comes to potting soil, Desert Rose has its own requirements. It generally needs potting soil with good looseness and air permeability, so when mixing soil we need to use some rather special methods. To create a high-quality potting soil environment, we can usually use perlite, vermiculite, coal cinders, and plant ash, mixed together in a certain ratio; soil prepared this way will be more conducive to the growth of Desert Rose.
2. Light
Desert Rose, as you can tell from its name, is a plant that quite likes light, so it should normally be given plenty of sunlight, usually placed in a spot where it can fully receive sunlight for care. Once the plant gets sufficient light, it can carry out photosynthesis better and form nutrients; when vegetative growth accumulates to a certain level, it will transform into reproductive growth, so it will naturally be able to bloom.
3. Watering
Desert Rose likes a relatively dry potting soil environment and is originally drought-tolerant by nature, but it does not like moisture and is not resistant to water, so when watering you must control the amount of water and the humidity in the potting soil well. Generally, wait until the potting soil has dried out completely and then water it thoroughly, but usually water it in the morning and evening, and do not let water accumulate in the pot. Especially in the height of summer, you should avoid the high-temperature period at noon, otherwise the water will easily evaporate, causing too great a local temperature difference and damaging the plant.
4. Fertilizing
Desert Rose quite likes fertilizer, and at different stages of life its nutrient needs also differ. During the growing period, it is suitable to apply nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium fertilizer to balance nutrition; before the flowering period, it is suitable to apply mainly nitrogen fertilizer with phosphorus and potassium fertilizer as a supplement; and during the bud-setting period, it is suitable to apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizer to promote blooming. After flowering, a multi-element compound fertilizer can be applied to help the plant recover its growth. Topdressing can generally be applied once a month; although Desert Rose likes fertilizer, you must also control the amount and frequency well to avoid excessive fertilization causing fertilizer damage.
Normally, as long as everyone masters the above operating steps, Desert Rose can not only grow well but also successfully bloom on schedule.
