Desert rose (Adenium obesum) is a flowering plant often called "Tianbao flower." As temperatures keep dropping, winter arrives right away. For the desert rose, winter is quite hard to endure: it not only easily enters dormancy and stops growing, but is also fairly prone to cold damage. Therefore, overwintering becomes a problem. So how should the desert rose be cared for in winter to survive it safely?

1. Watering depends on the region

In the northern and southern regions of our country, winter climates often differ quite a lot. The southern regions are generally relatively warm, and even in winter there is usually no need for heating. But in the northern regions, winter conditions are often very harsh, and homes generally have heating. Therefore, for areas with heating and areas without heating, our watering approach is often different as well.

After entering winter, the desert rose often enters dormancy due to the effects of low temperatures, and when we find the plant's leaves falling off, we must promptly take water-control measures. Moreover, when the temperature drops to 15°C and the plant's leaves have all fallen off, we generally do not need to water it, and should instead keep the potting soil on the dry side to grow the desert rose. When the temperature is above 15°C, we can give a small amount of water that year.

If there is heating in the environment, then we can manage the potted desert rose with normal watering methods. Also, the air in heated rooms is generally drier and the air humidity is relatively low, so the watering frequency also needs to be increased accordingly. By watering correctly and promptly, you can prevent the desert rose's main stem from becoming soft due to lack of water.

2. Scientific and reasonable fertilizing

In warm areas with heating, the desert rose will not enter dormancy, but will continue to maintain its growing state. So we generally need to give the plant a small amount of fertilizer once a month, usually mainly a nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer, to balance nutrients at one time. This can promote the desert rose's overall growth. But in areas without heating, fertilizing is generally not recommended, since the plant grows very slowly after entering dormancy at low temperatures.

3. Improve light conditions in time

The desert rose is a sun-loving plant, so during cultivation and care it needs sufficient light. For environments with heating, increasing light can prevent the plant from becoming leggy. And for desert roses without heating, it can often also have an anti-freezing effect.

As long as everyone does a good job with the above three aspects, the desert rose can often get through the winter smoothly and safely.
