The Desert Rose gets its name because it grows in environments close to desert regions and blooms as beautifully as a rose. In fact, it has no relationship with roses whatsoever, and it is certainly not a type of rose as its name might suggest. Its growth habits determine that this plant is destined to prefer a growing environment with abundant light, high temperatures, and dry conditions.

However, winter has now arrived. Although southern regions of our country do not experience the severe cold and low temperatures of the north, this is after all a flowering plant that loves warmth and heat and is not cold-tolerant, so winter care methods are crucial. This is the guarantee that ensures whether the plant can safely and smoothly overwinter. Today, we will share with you the winter care methods for the Desert Rose.

I. Ensure Adequate Temperature

Since the Desert Rose is not cold-tolerant, temperature protection is crucial. If the temperature drops to 10°C, the plant can easily suffer cold damage, so before a significant temperature drop occurs, the plant should be promptly moved indoors to a warm, sunny location with good air circulation for care.

II. Soil Must Be Loose

Although the Desert Rose is relatively tolerant of poor soil, when grown as a potted plant, it is still necessary to ensure a potting soil environment that is loose, breathable, has strong water permeability, and drains quickly. Using this kind of potting soil to grow the Desert Rose means that even when watering heavily, water accumulation in the pot will not occur. After all, the Desert Rose tolerates dryness but not moisture, and water accumulation can easily cause root rot.

III. Water Moderately

Although we choose loose soil with good permeability to grow the Desert Rose, watering should still be moderate and not excessive in normal times, especially in winter when watering should generally be strictly controlled to keep the potting soil slightly on the dry side. Moreover, the plant will stop growing when the ambient temperature drops below 15°C, at which point watering can be stopped entirely. Wait until the potting soil has been completely dry for 2-3 days before watering again.

IV. Apply Fertilizer in Advance

Since the Desert Rose has poor cold tolerance and easily enters dormancy and stops growing when winter temperatures are low, in order to improve the plant's cold resistance and give it a sufficiently strong constitution to overwinter, it is generally necessary to apply sufficient fertilizer before winter begins. Usually, a slow-release fertilizer mainly containing phosphorus and potassium is suitable, as the fertilizer effect lasts longer and fertilizer burn is less likely to occur.

When the temperature warms up and the plant resumes normal growth, we then apply quick-acting and slow-release fertilizers mainly containing phosphorus and potassium. This not only gives the plant sufficient nutrients to maintain good growth, but also promotes blooming.
