Lucky Bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana) is not only suitable for foliage viewing, but also carries auspicious and beautiful meanings, so many households grow it. However, plants that were growing perfectly well through spring, summer and autumn tend to develop yellow leaves more easily after winter arrives, and may even die.

1. Keeping warm and protecting against the cold

We can find an old piece of cloth, cut it into a rectangle, then wrap it around the outer wall of the container holding the water-grown Lucky Bamboo and secure it. Then use things like waste newspaper to also wrap the branches and leaves of the Lucky Bamboo, but be careful not to seal the top, so that air can be exchanged. Finally, just place it in a relatively warm spot indoors.

2. Regular water changes

In winter, changing the water for hydroponic Lucky Bamboo should not be done too frequently, but it still needs to be changed regularly; generally, change the water about once a month. The water quality requirements are not particularly high either; just use ordinary clean water, with no need to add nutrient solution. But the water temperature must be guaranteed, generally maintained at around 20°C, which is more suitable.

3. Providing light

Winter is generally a rather gloomy and cold season. If there is a sunny day, promptly remove the old cloth, waste newspaper and similar things wrapping the Lucky Bamboo, and then let the plant get more sun. It is recommended to place the plant on sunny days in the spot indoors that gets the most sun, so it can fully receive light. When the sun sets and the temperature drops, wrap the plant again with old cloth, waste newspaper and similar things to keep it warm and prevent freezing.

Lucky Bamboo is a tropical evergreen plant. It usually prefers a warm growing environment, and the most suitable growing temperature is between 18°C-24°C. When the ambient temperature is below 13°C, it generally tends to stop growing and enter a dormant state, and the minimum temperature for overwintering should be kept above 10°C.

However, Lucky Bamboo also has relatively strong shade tolerance and can survive in low-light environments, but as long as the light intensity is not too strong, it is still recommended to let it get more sun, especially in winter. By following the methods above, you can ensure the plant will not suffer cold damage and can also maintain a good growing state.
