How to grow the "Golden Ten Thousand Taels" plant so it thrives
The "Golden Ten Thousand Taels" flower is a very distinctive flowering plant. Because the whole tree is covered with bright red berries, it is very pleasing to look at, making it highly suitable for growing as an ornamental berry potted plant. It also has quite a few alternative names, commonly including "Hongyun Dangtou", "Fugui Zi", and "Zhusha Gen" (coral ardisia). Just from its names alone, you can guess that this is no ordinary green plant.

When the flowering and fruiting season arrives, the Golden Ten Thousand Taels is laden with fruit, which turns from green to red, with the red berries and green leaves setting each other off beautifully. It is very interesting and highly ornamental. Moreover, when grown as an ornamental berry potted plant, its routine care and management are also very simple. So, how do you grow the Golden Ten Thousand Taels plant?
1. Suitable temperature
As an ornamental berry plant, if you want the Golden Ten Thousand Taels to hold its fruit for a long time, maintaining the right temperature is essential. In fact, the Golden Ten Thousand Taels prefers a warm growing environment, with the most suitable growing temperature between 16°C-28°C. In winter, the lowest temperature should be kept at around 10°C, and should not drop below 5°C, otherwise frost damage will cause fruit and leaf drop, reducing its ornamental value and possibly even killing it.
2. Provide shade in time
Although the Golden Ten Thousand Taels likes a warm growing environment, it is not tolerant of strong light and is especially afraid of scorching sun. Compared with harsh sunlight, it prefers a relatively shaded environment, so when the summer light is too strong, shade measures should be taken in time to prevent the plant from getting sunburned. At the same time, however, it should not be too lacking in light, because insufficient light can also easily cause fruit drop.
3. Placement
The Golden Ten Thousand Taels likes a semi-shaded placement environment. If growing it as a potted plant, the placement must be chosen well. It is generally recommended to place it in the living room, study, balcony, or other bright spots with good light. If the kitchen has a suitable spot, it can also be placed in the kitchen. This is because the Golden Ten Thousand Taels can absorb cooking fumes, so placing it in the kitchen can reduce fumes filling the space.
4. Ensure humidity
The Golden Ten Thousand Taels prefers a moist growing environment. In addition to watering in time, you should also spray water on the leaves and around the plant to increase air humidity. But in low-temperature environments such as winter, water should be controlled appropriately. Generally, wait until the potting soil is completely dry before watering thoroughly, while still spraying water frequently to maintain moisture. During the peak growing season, water once every 3-5 days; when the temperature is high, water once a day; in low-temperature seasons, water once every half month.
5. Scientific fertilization
During the growing season, generally apply a thin compound fertilizer once every half month to the Golden Ten Thousand Taels. Of course, we can also apply slow-release fertilizer, which lasts longer. After the fruit turns red in winter, fertilization can be stopped. After budding, 2-3 applications of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer can be given to promote flowering and fruiting.
It should be noted that during the summer and autumn flowering period, avoid rain, otherwise it can easily affect pollination and fruiting, and may even be fatal. Also, during the flowering period, provide plenty of light. Placing the pot in bright places such as the living room or study is more conducive to flowering and fruiting. Of course, we can also use artificial pollination to increase the fruit-setting rate. As long as you take careful care of it, it can be covered with bright red berries all over the tree.
