Schefflera is a plant whose branches and leaves stay evergreen all year round. Not only are its leaf shapes unusual and its leaf color deep green, but its overall plant form is also quite attractive, making it a very beautiful ornamental plant. What is more, its leaves can also absorb harmful gases such as nicotine produced by smoking, which for friends who like to smoke at home is undoubtedly a blessing.

And more importantly, even after its leaves turn yellow and drop off, this ornamental evergreen plant does not lose all of its ornamental value. So whether they are household users or office workers, people often like to keep a potted Schefflera in their living and working environments.

However, some gardening friends also feel that Schefflera is not easy to grow. The situations that tend to occur more often are sparse leaves, easy yellowing, and slow growth. In fact, as long as we care for it according to the growth habits of Schefflera, it is generally quite easy to grow well. So what should you do when a Schefflera has sparse, yellowing leaves and slow growth? We usually need to do a good job in the following four areas:

  1. Potting soil

Like most flowering plants, Schefflera prefers a fertile, loose, breathable and well-draining, slightly acidic soil environment. Originality generally suggests using leaf mold or peat soil plus garden soil, then mixing in about 25% river sand to make a blended soil. At the same time, to ensure there is enough fertility in the potting soil, we can also add a little cake fertilizer as a base fertilizer.

  2. Light

Schefflera likes a semi-shaded growing environment, so some gardening friends assume it is very shade-tolerant and keep it long-term in an environment lacking light. In fact, besides liking semi-shade, Schefflera also quite likes light. As long as the light intensity is not too strong and it is not exposed to scorching sun, it can usually be given full-day direct sunlight.

And semi-shade does not mean no light is provided at all. Generally, just place the pot in a bright environment with plenty of scattered light for care. In such a light environment, Schefflera is often more likely to sprout side buds and send out side branches, thus growing more lush with branches and leaves and a deep green leaf color.

  3. Humidity

Schefflera quite likes a moist growing environment. It requires both relatively high air humidity and sufficient water in the potting soil. In an environment where both air humidity and potting soil moisture are relatively high, Schefflera often grows better. Therefore, in daily care and management, we should replenish water in time to maintain environmental humidity.

Although Schefflera likes moisture, it is not tolerant of water, or rather its water tolerance is relatively poor. And when watering, it is generally difficult to control the amount well, so it is generally recommended to spray it with water more and water it less during routine care and management. Because if the potting soil stays too wet for a long time, it often causes a large number of leaves to drop.

  4. Fertilizer

Over the whole growing season, Schefflera does not need a very large amount of fertilizer, but when growth is very vigorous in summer, its demand for nutrients is also relatively large, so it also quite likes fertilizer. Therefore, generally in the peak growing season in summer, it is recommended to give it a top dressing once a week to better meet its growth needs. And it can also prevent leaves from becoming sparse, yellowing and dropping.

If the Schefflera we grow is a variegated-leaf variety, then we must strictly control and reduce the use of nitrogen fertilizer. Because if too much nitrogen is taken in, it is very easy to make the color of the patches fade or even disappear, thereby reducing the ornamental value of the potted plant.

As long as everyone can manage according to the care suggestions in the above four areas, not only can you avoid the situations of sparse leaves, yellowing and slow growth in Schefflera, but you can also make it grow branches and leaves vigorously, and very soon the potted plant will grow lush with branches and leaves, dripping with green.
