Cherry blossoms are a symbol of the Japanese people and hold an irreplaceable place in their hearts, representing their spirit and aesthetics, sparing nothing for the sake of a fleeting brilliance. The Japanese call cherry blossom viewing “hanami,” and it has already become a folk custom.

Cherry blossoms can be grown in pots. In most regions of our country, cherry blossoms are suitable for ground planting and are rarely potted. Cherry blossom varieties suitable for potting include “Asahi”, “Mamezakura” (Fuji cherry) “Ukon”, “Gyoiko” and others. Only by adopting the following measures can potted cherry blossoms achieve abundant flowers and lush leaves.

  1. Propagation is mainly by sowing, cuttings and grafting. When propagating cherry blossoms by sowing, be careful not to let the seed embryo dry out; sow immediately after collection or stratify in moist sand and sow in spring of the following year.

  2. For grafting propagation, seedlings of cherry or wild cherry can be used as rootstock. Perform cut grafting in late March or bud grafting in late August; after the graft takes, cultivate for 3 to 4 years before it can be lifted from the nursery for planting.

  3. When planting, apply 15 to 25 kg of decomposed compost per pit or trench, and in July apply 1 to 2 kg of ammonium sulfate per plant.

  4. After flowering and before germination in early spring, prune away dead branches, diseased and weak branches, and leggy branches; try to avoid pruning thick branches so as to keep the crown full and well-rounded.
