Carnation is a plant of the genus Dianthus, and it has quite a few alternative names, mainly including lion's head dianthus, musk dianthus, large-flowered dianthus, Dutch dianthus, and so on.   Carnation is a plant of the genus Dianthus, and it has quite a few alternative names, mainly including lion's head dianthus, musk dianthus, large-flowered dianthus, Dutch dianthus, and so on. There are many varieties of carnations on the market now, and in an indoor environment at room temperature, as long as they are cared for properly, they generally bloom continuously and are often given as flowers for Mother's Day, representing good health and best wishes for mothers and widely used in flower arrangements. But potted carnations are also very beautiful, so they are often grown at home as well.

Carnations are mostly propagated by cuttings, but they can also be propagated by sowing seeds. I have already explained carnation cuttings in a previous article, so below I will illustrate the method of growing carnations from seed.

  Method/steps as follows:

  1. To propagate by sowing, you first need to buy high-quality seeds. Because carnation seeds are very light and can easily be blown away, you need to pay attention to collecting and storing them.

  2. After choosing the seeds, next you need to prepare a flower pot for sowing, which should have drainage holes and strong breathability. When sowing, scatter some ceramic clay pellets at the bottom of the pot to improve drainage, then spread a layer of potting soil on top of the pellets, and then sprinkle the seeds on the surface of the soil.

  3. After sowing the seeds, you need to spread a thin layer of potting soil over the seeds to prevent them from being blown away by the wind, and at the same time it also makes it easier for the seeds to take root. Then spray some water on the soil surface, and place the flower pot in a ventilated and bright place, but avoid direct sunlight. After that, you can spray some water frequently to achieve a good moisture-retaining effect, and after a period of time the seeds will take root and sprout.

  4. Actually, potted carnations at home are still fairly easy to grow. When the young plant grows to a certain height, you need to set up a small support for it, which can prevent the plant from growing crooked. And during this cultivation process, you need to prevent the plant from growing leggy, otherwise the ornamental value of the carnations produced will be greatly reduced.

  5. During the cultivation process, in addition to setting up supports for the plant, you also need to maintain soil moisture and nutrient supply and give it appropriate light. After waiting for the plant to return to normal growth, we can quietly wait for the carnations to bloom.

The method of growing carnations from seed is relatively simple and can be explained in just a few sentences. However, during the care process, you cannot let it only grow; as mentioned above, there are two aspects that everyone needs to pay attention to: one is setting up supports for it, and the other is nutrient supply. I believe that as long as everyone can carry out care and management according to the above methods, before long you will reap the warmth that carnations bring.
