In the wild, Acorus mostly grows near mountain streams and creeks. As long as the water source is good, it generally grows very lush and vigorous. Because this plant itself likes moisture, it often grows by the water, since its demand for water is very great. Acorus used for pot cultivation is often called "stone Acorus," but it still cannot do without water.

In the wild, Acorus mostly grows near mountain streams and creeks. As long as the water source is good, it generally grows very lush and vigorous. Because this plant itself likes moisture, it often grows by the water, since its demand for water is very great. Acorus used for pot cultivation is often called “stone Acorus,” but it still cannot do without water, and it can grow on rocks in a pot filled with water. So, what is the growing medium for Acorus bonsai like?

Actually, cultivating Acorus does not require providing it with soil. We only need to place a few suitably sized stones in a pot, then pour in water at an appropriate depth. Of course, to let Acorus maintain good growth on the stones, we can pour a layer of cooled rice water over the stones, scatter some Acorus seeds, and then place the pot in a dark, damp place. As long as the pot keeps water in it for a long time, it is believed that before long Acorus with slender leaves will grow on the stones.

However, although we do not provide soil for Acorus during this process, when choosing stones we generally recommend using water-absorbing stone, because this kind of stone is covered with thousands of tiny pores. After it is placed in a pot filled with water, the powerful water-absorbing capacity of the water-absorbing stone will continuously draw up water until the water is absorbed into the stone to a certain degree. In this way, the slender roots spread all over the Acorus can all absorb the water needed for growth, which provides a strong guarantee for its healthy growth.

Although there is no soil, to let it grow better, we usually recommend spreading a layer of fresh moss on the water-absorbing stone. This not only ensures that Acorus can maintain a better growth state on a loose, breathable, water-retaining medium, but also lets the moss and Acorus complement and set each other off, making the whole bonsai form an indivisible whole and enhancing its ornamental value overall.

For people who live long-term in busy cities, there is every reason to grow a few Acorus in pots in a home study or other places, so that it can bring a bit of greenery and beauty to the home in all four seasons. Placing a few pots of Acorus at home not only adds greenery, but also lets us feel the breath of mountain forests, as if the home were a tiny piece of nature. It can not only cultivate the owner's temperament, but also bring the owner fresh comfort. Why not do it?
