Freesia, as a herbaceous flowering plant suitable for growing in pots, has high ornamental value, and its flowering period can last nearly 2 months, so gardening friends who are familiar with this flowering plant often like to grow it. Moreover, freesia has many varieties and rich flower colors; some bloom elegantly, while others bloom brilliantly, often satisfying the needs of gardening friends with different tastes.

Freesia can be propagated by seed, by dividing corms, or by tissue culture to breed young plants. However, for home pot cultivation, seeding or dividing corms is generally used to obtain small potted seedlings. So when is the best time to plant freesia? Because different propagation methods are used, the best propagation time also differs slightly, but the approximate time is the same.

To improve the survival rate and sprouting effect of pot cultivation, we usually need to choose the best planting time when growing freesia in pots. Since freesia not only has poor heat tolerance but also relatively weak cold tolerance, its root system grows best in a temperature environment of 15°C-18°C, and the most suitable growing temperature should generally be kept between 15°C-18°C. The seasons that can meet this temperature condition are mostly spring and autumn, so spring and autumn are more suitable for planting freesia.

However, compared with spring and autumn, although both can meet the temperature conditions and it is also relatively easy to control light intensity and duration, autumn is generally still chosen for planting. Usually, 4-5 freesia corms of different varieties can be buried in a flower pot, and at the same time, an appropriate amount of base fertilizer should be applied to add nutrients to the growing soil, thereby promoting better sprouting and growth of the freesia corms.

After planting the corms, we need to water the pot thoroughly once, then place the flower pot outdoors in a sunny and well-ventilated place for care. After October in autumn, as the temperature gradually drops, we then move it indoors to a place near a windowsill for care. After all, the windowsill position generally makes it easier to receive light and can also ensure smooth ventilation, which provides relatively good conditions for the plant's growth.

Potted freesia blooms in April-May, and after the flowers fade and June arrives, the plant's branches and leaves gradually turn yellow and wither. After a few days of corm development, we need to promptly dig the corms out of the potting soil, dry them, and store them in a cool, ventilated, dry place. When autumn arrives, as the weather turns cooler and the temperature becomes suitable, we can replant the freesia corms in pots for cultivation.
