Everyone knows that although Buddhist pine (Podocarpus macrophyllus) has high ornamental value and is not only suitable for landscaping but also often grown as a potted plant, it is also an excellent tree species for making bonsai. However, Buddhist pine prefers warmth and light, and is very suitable for planting in southern China, while in northern China, due to the too-low winter temperatures, it is not suitable for large-scale planting. So, can Buddhist pine be planted outdoors in Shandong?

As for whether Buddhist pine can be planted outdoors in Shandong, we first need to understand the winter temperature changes in the Shandong region. If Shandong is geographically located in northern China, then naturally it is not suitable for planting Buddhist pine outdoors, because winters in the north are often a scene of freezing cold, and Buddhist pine has relatively poor cold resistance and is very easily frostbitten or even frozen to death.

In China, the south and the north are often divided along the line from the Qinling Mountains to the Huaihe River, that is, this is used as the geographical dividing line. Areas north of this line are often called northern China, and areas south of this line are often called southern China. Shandong is located north of the Qinling Mountains to the Huaihe River, so it belongs to northern China. Since it is classified as part of northern China, naturally it is extremely cold in winter. I wonder if everyone still remembers the text "Winter in Jinan," a masterpiece by Lao She, which describes the extremely cold winter scene in Jinan, Shandong.

From the perspective of the climate environment, the climate type of Shandong roughly belongs to a warm temperate monsoon climate, but the changes across the four seasons are very obvious. Although the annual average temperature within the region remains between 11°C-14°C, and the annual average rainfall is also between 550-950 mm, which can be considered relatively high, and the sunshine duration is also relatively long, with a relatively mild temperature, making it suitable for growing crops. However, its average winter temperature generally remains between -1°C--4°C, while the lowest temperature can drop to between -11°C--20°C, which shows that its winters are very cold.

In view of the above considerations regarding the temperature environment, Buddhist pine is relatively difficult to plant outdoors in the Shandong region, mainly because the temperature is too low and the plants are easily frostbitten or frozen to death, making it unable to overwinter smoothly. It can be seen that outdoors in Shandong is not suitable for planting Buddhist pine, especially in the Jinan area of Shandong, where outdoor planting is even less recommended.
