Sageretia has a graceful form and high ornamental value, so many bonsai enthusiasts like to train it as a bonsai. It is also very widely used in Lingnan-style and Su-style bonsai, and is one of their main bonsai materials. But Sageretia likes a warm and humid growing environment and is not cold-tolerant, so does a Sageretia bonsai lose its leaves in winter?

In fact, to know whether a bonsai plant will lose its leaves, the main thing to look at is whether it is an evergreen species or a deciduous species. However, Sageretia is a rather unusual tree species: it can be grown both as an evergreen species and as a deciduous species. This is mainly determined by the temperature conditions in different regional environments.

Because Sageretia likes a warm and humid growing environment, in the southern regions of our country it can be grown as an evergreen plant without leaf loss, but in the northern regions of our country it often loses its leaves in winter, so in the northern regions it can be managed as a deciduous plant. Therefore, if you grow it in the northern regions of our country, temperature management is especially needed in winter, because when the ambient temperature is below 10°C the plant stops growing; when the temperature drops to 0°C, frost damage occurs.

Therefore, to ensure that Sageretia can successfully overwinter in winter, the original grower often needs to keep the growing environment temperature above 10°C, and at the lowest it must not fall below 5°C. But the winter temperature also must not be too high, otherwise poor growth can easily occur; especially in a bagged environment in winter, the temperature must not exceed 25°C, otherwise the plant will be scorched.

Leaf loss in Sageretia in winter is mostly seen in the northern regions, since it is mainly determined by the environment of the northern regions. Sageretia's leaf loss mainly begins after it finishes fruiting in autumn, but even if the leaves all fall off, the Sageretia bonsai can still show another kind of beauty, so the Sageretia bonsai also has the trait of changing its form with the seasons. But in the southern regions of our country, because the temperature environment is relatively suitable, leaf loss generally does not occur.
