Are Sageretia bonsai suitable for growing in the north?
Sageretia is an excellent material for making bonsai, especially in Lingnan-style bonsai, where its qualities can be fully brought out. But Sageretia likes a warm, humid growing environment and is a tree species suited to tropical and subtropical regions, so it is very well suited to being grown in southern China. This is because temperatures in southern China are relatively high and the humidity is fairly high, which is very suitable for the growth of Sageretia. So, can Sageretia bonsai be grown in the north?

As for whether Sageretia is suitable for growing in northern China, we first need to understand the characteristics of the climate in the north, and at the same time look at it in light of Sageretia's requirements for its growing environment. Because northern China is much colder than the south, especially in winter, when extremely low-temperature conditions can even occur. And Sageretia is warmth-loving and not cold-tolerant, so from this point of view, Sageretia is not suitable for growing in northern China.
Sageretia is not suitable for growing in northern China; the biggest difficulty is the effect of temperature on its growth, followed by the effect of humidity. Because Sageretia prefers a warm, humid climate and is heat-tolerant but not cold-tolerant, when both temperature and humidity are too low, it often has an adverse effect on the plant's growth. In addition, winter temperatures in northern China are very low, and the low-temperature period lasts a long time, while the humidity is not high either, so winter generally presents dry and cold conditions. Therefore, we should try not to grow it in the north.
Sageretia likes warmth; although it is also shade-tolerant, it generally prefers sun even more. In summer it can withstand high temperatures of 35°C, but in winter the temperature in its growing environment must not be lower than 10°C, otherwise the plant will stop growing, and at the very lowest it must not be lower than 5°C, otherwise frost damage will occur. So Sageretia is a tree species that is heat-tolerant but not cold-tolerant. In northern China, winter temperatures are generally below 0°C, so it is very easy to freeze and injure or even freeze to death Sageretia. And Sageretia grows best in a temperature environment of around 25°C.
In addition, humidity is also very important for the growth of Sageretia; after all, Sageretia likes a humid climate. If you want Sageretia not to be affected by humidity, the relative air humidity is generally required to stay between 70%-80%, which is more suitable. If the humidity is too high or too low, it often has a certain negative effect on its growth, and especially when the humidity is too low, the plant may show various signs of poor growth.
And if we insist on growing Sageretia in the north, the first thing that needs to be solved is the problem of temperature and humidity, especially in winter conditions, where heat preservation and moisture retention measures are essential. In winter, the ambient temperature should not be lower than 10°C, and at the very lowest must not be lower than 5°C, so it can be moved into a greenhouse or indoors for care. But if it is placed indoors with heating, be sure to spray water frequently to keep it moist, and on sunny days let it get plenty of sun, which is very necessary for its growth.
