Generally speaking, sowing refers to using flower seeds for propagation, so that a large number of plants can be obtained in a short time, and the roots of seedlings grown from sowing develop well, giving them a longer lifespan and strong survival ability.

1. Sowing and propagation of open-field flowers

The general open sowing method is as follows.

(1) Seedbed requirements for sandy soil: loose and fertile, rich in humus, with an environment that ensures air circulation, sufficient sunlight, and good drainage.

(2) Site preparation and fertilization. Soil requirements for the seedbed: plow 30cm deep, remove debris, cover with about 12cm of soil, use manure or rotted finely crushed compost as base fertilizer, and level the bed surface. When planting, it is combined with superphosphate to promote growth. After flattening the sowing bed, it should be pressed down, and then the bed surface should be leveled.

(3) Seeds of different sizes require different soil depths. The thickness for large seeds is 3 times the seed thickness; small seeds are not placed in the seed [soil], and if conditions permit, a 0.3cm concentration sieve can be used.

(4) After the soil is finished, evenly cover with a layer of straw, then spray water with a fine-hole watering can. In the dry season, water before sowing, and before planting soil, soak the soil to keep it moist. During the rainy season, rainproof facilities are needed. Remove the cover when the seeds germinate and emerge.

2. Sowing and propagation of potted flowers

Potted plants are usually kept indoors, and the sowing period is unrelated to the season, usually depending on the flowering period.

(1) Prepare pots for planting and soil. Shallow pots are 10 cm deep, and sandy soil needs to be rich in humus. The ratios are as follows.

1 For small seeds. Garden soil 2: river sand 3: humus soil 5.

2 For medium seeds. River sand 2: humus soil 4: garden soil 4.

3 For large seeds. River sand 1: garden soil 4: humus soil 5.

(2) The bottom of the pot is covered with drainage holes, filled with broken pot pieces or coarse gravel, accounting for 1/3 of the pot depth. The upper part is screened coarse-grained culture soil, accounting for 1/3 of the soil thickness. The top layer is planting soil, accounting for 1/3 of the thickness. The soil surface is compacted and leveled, so that the soil surface is 1 cm from the pot. Immerse the shallow pot in water, but do not submerge it. After the soil is soaked, lift the pot. After too much water has seeped out, it can be planted.

(3) Management after sowing. Keep the soil moist, and after the seedlings emerge, gradually move them to a sunny place. Figure 2 shows potted flowers grown by sowing and propagation.
