The red spider lily is a bulbous plant. How should it be planted and cared for?
The red spider lily (scientific name: Lycoris radiata (L'Her.) Herb.) is a plant in the genus Lycoris of the family Amaryllidaceae. The bulb is nearly spherical, 1-3 cm in diameter. Leaves emerge in autumn, narrowly strap-shaped, about 15 cm long, about 0.5 cm wide, blunt at the tip, dark green, with a powdery green band in the middle. The umbel has 4-7 flowers, bright red. The flowering period is August-September, and the fruiting period is October. It is distributed in most parts of China, growing wild on shady, damp hillsides and along stream banks; it is also cultivated in gardens.

Now let's talk about growing the red spider lily. First, we need to understand how it changes through the four seasons: in spring it is a bulb, in summer it grows leaves, in autumn it sends up flowers, and in winter the leaves slowly fade away again, and so the cycle repeats.
Light: The red spider lily likes diffused light and dislikes strong light, so the light should not be too intense. Gardeners must take this into account when choosing a planting spot; it can be cared for on a north-facing balcony or in a relatively shaded place.
Soil: The red spider lily has very low soil requirements; even planting it in garden soil in the Beijing area works well. But since it is, after all, a southern flower, the soil should be acidic, somewhat sandy, and the kind that is airy and well-draining.
Watering: Keep the soil moist, but do not let water accumulate. Do not water too much, otherwise the rhizome will rot. From 20 days before flowering through the flowering period, a moderate supply of water is essential to achieve uniform flowering and to help the flowers last.
Temperature: Most red spider lily varieties prefer a warm climate. A maximum temperature not exceeding 30°C and an average temperature of 24°C are suitable for the growth of the red spider lily. In winter, an average daily temperature above 8°C and a minimum temperature of 1°C do not affect its growth.
After-flowering care: After the red spider lily blooms, the flower scape should be cut off to reduce the loss of nutrients.
Depth: The planting depth should not be too deep; it is best if the top of the bulb is just buried at the soil surface.
