Tulip (scientific name: Tulipa gesneriana L.) is a perennial herbaceous plant of the genus Tulipa in the family Liliaceae, with a bulb. Its English names are "Garden tulip" or "Didier’s tulip". The tulip is widely believed to have originated in Turkey, and it is the national flower of Turkey, the Netherlands, Hungary and other countries.

Leaves 3-5, linear-lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate; the flower is solitary and terminal, large and showy; the tepals are red or mixed with white and yellow, sometimes white or yellow, 5-7 cm long and 2-4 cm wide; the 6 stamens are equal in length, the filaments are hairless, there is no style, and the stigma is enlarged and crest-shaped; the flowering period is April-May.

The tulip is the national flower of the Netherlands, but its flowers come in many colors, and it is cold-hardy and dislikes high temperatures, so it is suitable for planting in autumn and winter. How is it best to plant tulips? Tulips can be grown in soil or in water, though water culture is a little more difficult, while soil culture is easier. Besides garden cultivation, tulips can be grown in pots, so let's take a look at how to grow tulips at home in flower pots on the balcony.

How to care for tulips

When buying tulip bulbs, you can check whether they are fresh and healthy and whether there are signs of damage or rot; choose larger bulbs of better quality, which will bloom more beautifully. Many flower lovers buy bulbs that rot before they even bloom, so it is best to choose better ones.

The flower pot must have holes, and the soil should be a soft, breathable, nutrient-rich soil, but it is best not to use purely nutrient soil for planting; add some ordinary garden soil to it. Before planting, the soil is best kept slightly dry; if the soil is too wet and too sticky, you can sun-dry it before use.

The planting time is generally around November in autumn. Remove the brown skin on top of the bulb, then plant it into the soil. At this point, pay attention, because there is a saying that it should be buried 10 cm deep in the soil; in fact, many people bury it under too much soil this way and the bulb rots inside,

so in practice, when planting, the bulb can be left partly exposed. To prevent it from being washed out of the soil or washed away when watering, you can fix it slightly in place; you can leave a bit of the stem exposed outside, or you can cover it with a few centimeters of soil. This does not have to be so strictly followed.

The period after planting is the time for root growth; it can do without sunlight, keep the soil slightly dry, and place it in a spot on the balcony without sunlight. After about half a month, you can gently shake the bulb; if it feels like it will not move, that proves the roots have grown out.

Once the roots have grown, it can be exposed to sunlight. It is better for the soil to be somewhat on the dry side, but when it is too dry you still need to water. Just do not let the soil stay soaked in water, as this is the easiest way to rot the bulb. After some time it will sprout. After sprouting, it is even more important to keep it in the sun regularly. By March or April in spring, the flowers will bloom.
