The lotus has a fresh fragrance and is one of many people's favorite flowers. Nowadays many people choose to grow lotus in pots at home, but the plants often fail to bloom. What should be done? What exactly is the reason? What factors can cause potted lotus to not bloom?

Factor 1

The wrong variety was chosen

Some lotus varieties are wild or grown specifically for food; they naturally bloom less, their rhizomes have a stronger growth capacity, they bloom less, or even not at all. In addition, different varieties have slightly different flowering periods. A few varieties do not begin to form buds until early August, blooming relatively late.

Therefore, before planting, everyone should fully understand the habits of the lotus, and not mistake late blooming for not blooming at all.

Factor 2

Insufficient light

The lotus is a sun-loving plant, and its growing environment needs good ventilation and ample light. If it grows for a long time in a shaded environment, the plant cannot get enough light for its growth, or because of weather conditions, continuous cloudy and rainy days during the flower bud differentiation stage prevent the leaves from carrying out photosynthesis, making it very hard for the lotus to bloom.

It is best to choose pots sensibly, selecting the pot according to the different plant sizes.

Factor 3

Planting density too high

Too high a density means there are two or more lotus plants in the pot, or the leaves are dense and shade each other, so the plant has poor ventilation, which affects flowering.

Therefore, make sure to plant only one plant per pot; for lotus with dense leaves, prune the leaves in time to increase light penetration.

Factor 4

Pot mud too deep or too shallow

The depth of the pot mud also greatly affects plant growth. If the pot mud is too deep, the plant's roots cannot breathe and flower bud growth is restricted; if the pot mud is too shallow, the roots cannot anchor the plant, and the flower buds easily shift around in the soil and cannot develop normally.

Usually, for small varieties the pot mud should be 17-20 cm, and the pot soil should not be too loose. For medium and large varieties, the pot mud should be over 30 cm.

Factor 5

Light-transmitting containers prevent flower bud differentiation

Lotus bud differentiation requires a relatively enclosed environment; glass containers or white plastic pots are not conducive to flower bud differentiation. Poor flower development will affect flowering. Therefore, if the pot has air holes around it, seal them with black tape as much as possible, and try not to use white or even transparent pots.
