Iris lactea generally refers to Iris lactea var. chinensis, also known as malian, malan, iris flower, hanpu, lishi, licao, jucao, shishou, sanjian and majiu, a perennial densely tufted herbaceous plant. So when does Iris lactea generally bloom? How much does a jin of seeds cost? How is it planted? Can it be placed in the bedroom? Learned from a flower planting base in Jiangsu, the seed price of Iris lactea is around 20-30 yuan/jin, and the sowing rate per mu is 4-5 jin.

When does Iris lactea generally bloom?

The flowering period of Iris lactea is generally between April and June. In the north the flowers can bloom for around 50 days, and in the south it can bloom twice. Its flowers are 2.5-6 cm wide, the plant is 35-85 cm tall, and the flowering period is 85-120 days, with slight differences from region to region.

How is Iris lactea planted?

I. Nursery site selection

The quality of the soil directly determines the quality of flower growth. If the soil is especially good and the growing environment is especially good, then staff management will be much easier. Iris lactea is not strict about soil; it can be sandy gravel soil, yellow soil or clay, but soil with a large sand content has ordinary germination. Iris lactea is cold-resistant, drought-resistant and waterlogging-resistant. The planting terrain should be flat and good for drainage. When the dog days come, rainfall increases, and the rainwater must be able to drain away immediately, otherwise there will be partial seedling death. The key point of the nursery must be good drainage; ordinary soil is fine, with sufficient sunlight.

II. Land preparation

1. Deep ploughing: Iris lactea is very sensitive to fertility. With sufficient soil fertility, the flowers are large and bright and the plants are robust. But the soil of many garden sites is basically nursery land with ordinary fertility, so to have bright flowers, sufficient green manure still needs to be applied before planting, broadcasting 5,000-7,000 kg of cow dung and chicken manure per mu. After fertilizing, plough the land once and harrow it once. Only in this way will the soil and nutrients be fully and evenly mixed together, with no large clods, making planting easier and raising the germination rate.

2. Making beds: To facilitate the watering, weed clearing, fertilizer broadcasting and other maintenance management needed during the one-year growing period of Iris lactea seedlings, Changjing Landscape recommends making the land into standard 1.6 m wide beds, with a total length of 15-20 m, and the actual situation determines the specifics depending on the terrain.

III. Sowing

The seeds of Iris lactea are ordinary in size and have strong seedling emergence ability. It is recommended to plant them very shallowly, with a soil cover thickness of no more than 5 cm. Most people choose the broadcast sowing method. Under calm wind conditions, mix the Iris lactea seeds in wet sand, then broadcast them onto the ground. After broadcasting, you can choose manual raking to cover the soil or mechanical raking to cover the soil. After covering the soil, water once, and in about 5-12 days the germination rate can be improved.

IV. Seedling stage management

There is little maintenance work during the growing period of Iris lactea. It has no pests or diseases and has strong growth momentum. The key work is mostly concentrated during the flowering period. Before flowering, apply 35 kg of quick-acting fertilizer per mu as a top dressing. Fertilizing before flowering is to extend the flowering time, increase the number of flowers and make the colors more beautiful. Do not fertilize during the full flowering period. When Iris lactea is blooming, it needs more water, and at this time you should water at the right time according to the weather conditions.

Can Iris lactea be placed in the bedroom?

Iris lactea can be grown indoors and is harmless to the human body. It is usually used as an outdoor ground cover plant. Its root system is well developed, its leaf mass is abundant, its adaptability to the environment is strong, its growth momentum is vigorous, and its management is extensive. It is an excellent ornamental ground cover plant that saves water, resists drought, tolerates salt and alkali, and resists weeds, diseases, insects and rodents. In northern regions, Iris lactea can have a green period of more than 280 d. Its leaves are emerald green and soft, and its violet-blue flowers are elegant and beautiful, with fragrant nectar and a flowering period of up to 50 d, capable of forming a beautiful garden landscape.
