Is Pentas (Star Flower) Poisonous? Blooming Period and Indoor Care Methods
Pentas, also known as star flower, umbrella flower, star-shaped flower, etc., is a common flower in tropical regions. Because of its diverse flower colors and flowers that look like five-pointed stars, it is deeply loved by flower enthusiasts. It is currently widely used in potted plants, flower beds and various landscape areas. So, is pentas poisonous? When does it generally bloom? Can it be kept indoors? How do you care for it?

Is it poisonous?
It is not poisonous. Its flowers come in colors such as pink, crimson and peach red, and they really look colorful. Therefore, it is widely planted by many flower lovers. Keeping a pot in your own yard or room can not only add color, but also effectively purify our air, giving us a healthy experience for body and mind. So it is a very good ornamental flower. Not only is it non-toxic, but its benefits are also considerable.
Blooming time:
Pentas is a perennial herbaceous flower with a perennial root system. It is not only drought-tolerant but also able to tolerate high temperatures, so its blooming period lasts a long time. Generally, its blooming period is from March to October, as long as eight months. So its blooming period is quite long.
Can it be kept indoors?
It can be placed in an indoor bedroom. It is not only beautiful but can also effectively purify the air in our room, making our room unusually fresh, decomposing some harmful substances and effectively filtering them out, bringing a clean resource to our breathing. So its purifying effect should not be underestimated.
Cultivation techniques:
1. Potting: After sowing, pentas can be transplanted into pots in 7-9 weeks. The pot diameter should preferably be 10-15 cm. A 10 cm pot can hold 1 seedling, and a 15 cm pot can hold 1-2 seedlings. Before potting, fertilizer should be applied moderately to make the plants grow strong, so as to reduce the shock that potting causes to the plants.
2. Medium: For pentas cultivation, use sterile peat soil that contains a little fertilizer and drains well. The pH value should preferably be 6.5-6.8 to avoid iron toxicity and magnesium deficiency. If the pH value is lower than 6.0, severe leaf edge scorch will occur due to iron toxicity, causing the plants to stop growing.
3. Temperature: Warm heat and sufficient sunlight help the growth of pentas. During the growth period, the night temperature should preferably be kept above 17-18°C, and the day temperature above 22-24°C. A temperature below 10°C will make flowering uneven and delay or hinder the opening of the flowers.
4. Light: Pentas likes an environment with sufficient sunlight. The stronger the light, the more compact and stocky the plants. Therefore, in winter with weak light and short daylight, attention should be paid to supplementing light.
5. Water: Pentas is relatively drought-tolerant but not tolerant of waterlogging. During the growth period, do not overwater, and at the same time avoid water accumulation in the growing medium, so as to prevent root rot. When watering, the water temperature should not be too low (that is, the water temperature should be consistent with the medium temperature). Overwatering often makes the plants turn yellow and the flowers grow slowly.
6. Fertilization: One week after pentas is planted, start applying 800-1000 times diluted "Yelüjing" solution, watering once every 7-10 days. When the plants enter the middle growth stage (that is, plant height 8-10 cm), switch to applying 800-1000 times diluted "Kaihuajing" solution, once a week, to promote flower bud differentiation and good growth.
Precautions for growing pentas
1. After pentas is planted, when the plant has 3-4 pairs of true leaves, it can be pinched once to make the branches neat and the flowering uniform.
2. Pentas generally only needs to be pinched once. If the blooming period is expected to be too early, it can be pinched twice. Each pinching will delay flowering by 10-12 days.
3. The cultivation time for pentas in a 10 cm flower pot is 110-120 days, and the cultivation time in a 15 cm flower pot is 120-140 days.
