The money tree, scientifically known as Pachira aquatica, is a small tree that can grow 4-5 m tall, with a rather loose crown and chestnut-brown, hairless young branches. Its flowering period is from May to November, the fruits ripen successively, and the seeds germinate naturally after falling to the ground. The money tree has an attractive plant shape, with stems and leaves remaining green all year round, making it a very popular indoor foliage plant. The branches of young seedlings are soft and tolerant of pruning, and can be trained into stump specimens and bonsai of various artistic shapes. So, how do you care for a small money tree? What do you need to pay attention to?

I. How do you care for a small money tree?

(1) The small money tree, like the large money tree, prefers a warm, humid environment with full sun or slight partial shade, and its optimum growing temperature is 20°C to 30°C. The hot, humid summer season is when the money tree grows fastest, so during this period fertilizer and water management should be strengthened, direct sunlight should be avoided, and it should be placed in a spot with diffused light so that it grows robustly. In winter, place it in a bright indoor spot. Keep the indoor temperature at 15-25°C in winter, and never let the indoor temperature fall below 8°C, otherwise cold damage can easily occur, with leaf drop in mild cases and death in severe cases.

(2) The small money tree should not be watered too much, to prevent waterlogging in the potting soil, which causes root rot, yellowing leaves and branches, and even plant death. Usually spray the leaves with 0.5% ferrous sulfate and 0.3% potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution, and spray water on the leaves every day to keep the leaf color emerald green.

(3) The potting soil for the small money tree should be an acidic sandy loam with good drainage and containing humus. Generally, use 6 parts garden soil, 2 parts decomposed organic fertilizer, 2 parts coarse sand, 2 parts coal cinder, and 1 part peanut cake to make the growing medium. The pot or tub should be at least 40 cm deep to benefit root growth and development.

(4) Applying appropriate amounts of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer can make the small money tree grow quickly with thick, sturdy stems, showing a vigorous, rustic beauty. In spring, the branches should be pruned to encourage new shoots to sprout from the base of the stem, making the new shoots easier to braid into shapes.

(5) Light requirements of the small money tree: full sun can make the stem nodes shorter and the plant shape compact and full, and it thickens the swollen trunk, which is the main ornamental part. With insufficient light, the cultivated tree grows more slowly. Place planted young money tree seedlings in a shaded spot, but do not let the light be too dim, otherwise the plant will grow thin and tall.

II. What do you need to pay attention to when growing a small money tree?

In the process of growing a money tree, pay attention to:

1. Pay attention to ventilation

2. Avoid direct sun (diffused light is best)

3. Watering should be determined by your own pot, soil, and dry/wet conditions, not by a schedule

4. When fertilizing, use light fertilizer
