Wintersweet aliases: Jinmei, Lamei, Huangmeihua. Native to central China, it likes sunlight but also tolerates slight shade, is relatively cold-resistant and drought-tolerant, hence the saying "wintersweet that never dies of drought." Its flowers are fragrant and beautiful, making it a landscaping plant. So, when do wintersweet seeds mature? How to plant them? How many years until bloom?

When do wintersweet seeds mature?

Wintersweet seeds mature in July-August each year. Wintersweet is a traditional precious ornamental flower and tree native to China. Because wintersweet blooms in early winter and sets fruit at the end of winter, its flowering period is usually from November to March of the following year. After the flowers drop, it begins to set fruit, and when the fruit matures in July-August it turns yellow and becomes a jar-shaped fruit receptacle. At this point the seeds are already mature; you can pick the fruit receptacle, take out the seeds and store them dry.

How to plant wintersweet seeds?

Seed sowing

1. Spring sowing: In spring, first soak in warm water for 24 hours, place in a germination box to sprout, then sow in rows in sandy loam, water thoroughly, and seedlings will emerge in 15~20 days. In South China and Central China, normal germination can occur in early April, and 2 weeks after germination a light fertilizer can be applied to promote growth. After germination, plant into soil, and it can bloom after 2-3 years. Sow in February-March of the following spring, covering with soil about 4~5 cm thick. If the seeds are soaked in warm water before sowing, germination can be promoted. After the seedlings emerge in April, take care to prevent damage from cutworms, and strengthen management; shading is not necessary. Seedlings grow slowly, reaching only 10-15 cm in height in the first year, producing suckers only after 2-3 years, and can be used as rootstock for grafting wintersweet only after 4-5 years; generally they begin to bloom after 5-6 years. The sowing method can produce wintersweet rootstock in large quantities, but requires a relatively long cultivation time.

2. Autumn sowing: After the wintersweet fruit matures, harvest the seeds for sowing. After harvesting the mature wintersweet fruit, take out the seeds, dry them and they can be sown at any time. Because the seeds are newly harvested, relatively fresh and with good viability, they can be sown at any time. Generally, seedlings emerge about 10 days after sowing. Sowing wintersweet in autumn gives a relatively high survival rate.

Watering for seed propagation

Water sparingly; wintersweet fears waterlogging, and excessive soil moisture leads to poor growth and affects flower bud differentiation and opening. For potted plants, keep the soil at half moisture; in open ground, especially in the rainy season, prevent water accumulation. In spring, water once every ten days to half a month; if spring is dry and windy, water once every 2-3 days to keep the soil moist; in summer, appropriately increase watering to keep the soil absolutely moist; in autumn and winter, the soil only needs to be slightly moist.

Pest and disease control

1. Pests: Generally when planted in dark, damp places, during the rainy summer, due to high temperature and stuffiness, wintersweet is prone to scale insects, which can be controlled manually. At the turn of spring and summer, young buds are prone to aphids, which can be eliminated by spraying with 50% pirimicarb 3000 times dilution.

2. Diseases: (1) Black spot occurs in high-temperature seasons and can be treated by spraying with 65% zineb 500 times dilution or 0.3 Baume Bordeaux mixture. (2) Anthracnose also occurs in high-temperature seasons and can be treated by spraying with thiophanate 800 times dilution.

How many years does wintersweet take to bloom after planting?

Wintersweet trees grown from wintersweet seeds can bloom. Because wintersweet grown from seed is Goumei, it requires a very long time and much effort to cultivate and is difficult to bloom. Taking spring sowing as an example, after sowing, water thoroughly, and seedlings usually emerge in 15~20 days; in South China and Central China, normal germination can occur in early April, and 2 weeks after germination a light fertilizer can be applied to promote growth. After germination, plant into soil, and generally it needs to be cultivated for 2-3 years before it can bloom.
