Cultivation techniques
Land selection and sowing
Land selection: Safflower has no strict requirements for soil, but to obtain high yields, medium and superior soil with deep soil layers, uniform soil fertility and good drainage must be selected. The terrain should be flat, with good drainage and irrigation conditions. Soybean and corn are good previous crops.
Seed preparation: Choose safflower varieties suitable for local cultivation, including Safflower No. 2 and New Safflower No. 1.
Fertilization: After the previous crop is harvested, plowing, fertilization and irrigation should be carried out immediately. Apply 1-1.5 tons of farmyard manure per mu, 8-10 kg of urea, 8-10 kg of phosphate fertilizer, 1 kg of zinc fertilizer; for plots with available potassium below 350 mg/kg, apply 3—5 kg of potassium fertilizer per mu. Before plowing, apply all of it evenly on the ground as base fertilizer, then plow it deeply into the soil. The plowing quality should be such that no area is missed or repeated, the depth is uniform, and the turning and covering are tight, with no furrows or ridges. The land preparation method of autumn irrigation, winter plowing and spring harrowing can be adopted. The quality of land preparation should meet the six-character standard of “neat, level, loose, fine, clean and moist.”
Chemical weeding: Before harrowing, use 80-100 g of trifluralin per mu mixed with 30 kg of water for soil treatment, spray evenly with a mechanical sprayer, ensuring no repeated spraying and no missed spraying. Immediately after spraying, use a light disc harrow to harrow and mix the chemical and soil evenly, with a harrowing depth of 4-5 cm.
Sowing:
(1) Determination of sowing period: Sowing can be carried out when the 5 cm soil temperature steadily passes above 5°C. Early sowing can increase yield. The suitable sowing period for safflower in this region is generally from late March to early April.
(2) Sowing method and sowing rate: The sowing method uses a grain seeder for drilling, with 45 cm equal row spacing, sowing depth of 4-5 cm, 50 seeds per meter, and uniform seed drop. The sowing rows should be straight and the sowing depth uniform. No repeated sowing or missed sowing, with tight soil covering and firm pressing. The sowing rate per mu is 2-2.5 kg.
Safflower yield per mu
Yunnan safflower has a high per-unit yield, with a yield of 35-40 kg per mu. ** safflower has a low per-unit yield, generally 12-15 kg per mu, and in low cases only 8-10 kg per mu.
