Sowing:

Sowing time: early to mid-May. 20~30 days before sowing, the seeds can be pre-germinated. Specific methods:

1. First soak the seeds in 45°C warm water, stir thoroughly, let cool naturally, change to cold water every 8~10 hours, soak for 2~3 days then remove and drain, then soak in 0.5% potassium permanganate solution for 1 hour, remove and wash clean, mix with river sand for germination, seed-to-sand ratio 1:3, mix evenly, sand moisture 60%, place indoors at 10~20°C, turn frequently, germination in 20~30 days, sow when 1/3 have germinated.

2. One week before sowing, treat the bed surface, apply 15g diammonium phosphate per sq m, use 3% carbofuran granules 7g per sq m of seedbed + 40% quintozene powder mixed into the top 5cm soil layer of the bed for soil disinfection, level the bed surface and wait to sow. Furrow sowing, furrow spacing 8~10cm, furrow depth 3cm, cover with about 1cm of soil, sowing rate about 25g per sq m. After sowing, give one thorough watering according to soil and weather conditions. Seeds can also be sown directly without treatment, emerging about 30 days after sowing.

Blooming:

Blooms twice a year, late April to early May; autumn late July to early August.

What are the planting methods for littleleaf lilac?

1. Littleleaf lilac is best transplanted in early spring before the buds break. Apply sufficient base fertilizer in the planting hole first, cover the base fertilizer with a layer of soil, then place the seedling and fill with soil. After planting, water once thoroughly, then water 2—3 more times and it will survive. Littleleaf lilac has strong adaptability and is relatively easy to manage; usually just pay attention to weeding, prevent waterlogging in the rainy season, and water during drought, and it will grow smoothly. Lilac does not like heavy fertilizer; avoid excessive fertilizing, lest branches grow excessively and flowering is affected. Generally, apply rotted compost once every year or every other year before winter.

2. Before sprouting in mid-March, shape and prune littleleaf lilac, remove overly dense branches, thin weak branches, diseased and pest branches, and cut back vigorous growing branches, so the canopy is well ventilated and lets light through. After the flowers fade, if seed is not wanted, cut off the spent flowers together with the two buds below the flower spike, to reduce nutrient consumption and promote new branch growth and flower bud formation. After leaf fall, another pruning can be done to keep the canopy round and attractive, benefiting growth and flowering the next year.

3. Littleleaf lilac has very few diseases and pests. The main pests are aphids, bagworms and stinging caterpillars. Spray 800 to 1000 times 40% dimethoate emulsion or 1000 times 25% phosmet emulsion for control.
