Asparagus fern (Asparagus setaceus) prefers a warm, humid, semi-shaded and well-ventilated environment. It cannot tolerate severe cold in winter, and direct sunlight should be avoided in summer. Asparagus fern is a highly ornamental plant, and many people like to keep some potted asparagus ferns at home. So, do you know what the seed planting methods for asparagus fern are? What should you do if the leaves turn yellow? What benefits does it have?

Asparagus Fern Seed Planting Methods

Asparagus fern can be propagated by sowing seeds or by division, and the sowing method is generally used more often.

1. For seed propagation, mother plants are usually grown in the ground in a greenhouse for seed collection, and asparagus fern seeds mature successively from December to April of the following year. Because asparagus fern seeds have a short lifespan, they should be sown promptly after collection or stored in sand. When sowing, remove the seed coat, take out the seeds and sow them in a shallow pot or sow them individually in a flower pot with an inner diameter of 7 cm. If sowing in a shallow pot, sow the seeds at a spacing of 2 cm between plants and rows, press the seeds into the soil, cover with 2-3 mm of soil, cover the shallow pot with glass, and provide shade. Keep the temperature at around 20 degrees C, and germination will occur in about 20-30 days.

2. For division propagation, plants 4-5 years old can be divided in early spring. Operate carefully and damage the roots as little as possible. After the plants recover from transplanting, strengthen fertilizer and water management to encourage new shoots to grow. This method has a low propagation rate, and the new plants after division do not have a neat plant shape, so it is used less often.

When sown seedlings are about 5 cm tall, they can be transplanted into pots, placed into pots with an inner diameter of 7 cm, or the seedlings can be separated in a shallow pot at a spacing of 5 cm between plants and rows. Use a soil mix of half leaf mold and half sand, and appropriately add some decomposed manure. After the plants recover from transplanting, apply diluted liquid fertilizer once a week. When the plants grow to more than 10 cm, plant them permanently in 10-17 cm pots. The potting soil should be mixed in a ratio of 4 parts loam, 5 parts leaf mold, 1 part sand, and 1 part decomposed manure, and a base fertilizer should be applied. During the growing period, topdressing should be applied frequently, as it needs more nitrogen and potassium fertilizer.

During the growing season, asparagus fern cannot tolerate direct sunlight; too strong light will cause the leaf-like branches to wither and yellow and fall off. Therefore, shade is needed in summer, while in winter shade is not necessary. Asparagus fern has a high requirement for air humidity. During cultivation, water should often be sprayed on the surrounding ground.

For asparagus fern cultivated for many years, repot once every spring, remove the old soil, and replace it with fertile new soil. Depending on the plant's growth, use a larger pot or continue using the original pot. Prune away dead branches and yellow leaf-like branches to maintain an attractive plant shape. Control fertilization to avoid excessive growth and the production of long vines, which would ruin the plant shape and affect its ornamental value.

What to Do If Asparagus Fern Leaves Turn Yellow

Cause 1: Too little watering.

1. Prune yellow leaves promptly.

If you find that the leaves of the asparagus fern have already turned yellow, then there is no other way besides pruning. All yellowed leaves must be cut off; do not feel reluctant, as only this way can the asparagus fern grow more vigorously!

2. Water promptly.

After pruning the asparagus fern, promptly replenish water for it, watering about once every 2-3 days. Only when there is enough water will the asparagus fern avoid yellow leaves. However, note that water must not accumulate in the pot. If using tap water, it is best to let it sit overnight before use. When watering, you can add a little white sugar to the water, which can make the leaves of the asparagus fern even more emerald green.

If the air is too dry, it is best to use a spray bottle to spray water on the asparagus fern leaves, once in the morning and once in the evening, to ensure air humidity and allow the asparagus fern to grow more vigorously.

Cause 2: Direct strong light.

Asparagus fern likes a cool environment. If placed in a place with direct sunlight, it will cause yellow leaves. Therefore, asparagus fern needs to be placed in a bright living room with good north-south ventilation to receive scattered light.

Cause 3: Being fumigated by cooking fumes.

If people often smoke next to the asparagus fern, or if it is placed in a place with heavy cooking fumes, over time the harmful substances inhaled by the asparagus fern increase, which will lead to yellow leaves.

What Benefits Does Asparagus Fern Have?
