Pitcher plants (Nepenthes) is the collective name for all species in the genus Nepenthes. They possess a unique nutrient-absorbing organ——the pitcher. Nepenthes grows wild in Sandling Mountain, Leizhou and other places in Guangdong. So do you know whether pitcher plants can be grown indoors? How do they overwinter? How should you water them?

I. Can pitcher plants be grown indoors?

The sap of the pitcher plant itself is toxic, so if there are young children at home, they might accidentally ingest it, which makes it rather dangerous, so it is best not to grow it indoors;

Also, if the pitcher plant does not bloom, that is fine; even with children around, you can place it in a high spot for care, so growing it indoors will not have much impact and will not cause danger;

But if the pitcher plant blooms, its flowers will give off a scent that is not unpleasant while you sleep, so for the sake of healthy, good sleep it is better not to grow it indoors;

If you like growing pitcher plants, you can grow them on a courtyard balcony or in a courtyard, which is very safe; it will neither cause poisoning nor affect sleep and rest;

Also, pitcher plants are plants that need to attach themselves in order to grow; there must be something to cling to beside the plant for it to stand up, so when growing pitcher plants it is best to set up a support for them so they can stand upright, which also makes them look nicer and more attractive.

II. How do pitcher plants overwinter?

1. Temperature requirements for overwintering

Pitcher plants like a warm environment but are afraid of the cold. A slightly large temperature difference does not matter, as long as the temperature is kept at 10-15°C. Remember that the temperature must not be lower than 10°C and must not be higher than 35°C.

2. Moisture requirements for overwintering

The moisture here refers to watering and air humidity. Winter temperatures are relatively low, so watering must be controlled in amount and reduced compared with other seasons. But air humidity must still be maintained, so sprinkle water around the plant frequently.

3. Methods for overwintering pitcher plants

(1) Winter temperatures in the south are relatively high, so when the temperature meets the requirement it can be kept outdoors; when the temperature falls below 10°C, consider moving it indoors.

(2) Winters in the north are cold and there will be freezing outdoors. When you move the pitcher plant indoors for care, do not put it by the window; the temperature there is lower, there is heavy moisture around the window, and the side near the window is colder, which is not good for the growth of the pitcher plant.

(3) After the sun comes out in the morning, move it outdoors, and in the evening move it back inside, to ensure it can receive sunlight during the day. The winter sun is weaker, so generally it can be in the sun all day. If you want the pitcher plant to stay outdoors overnight, that is of course also fine; wrap the whole pitcher plant in plastic film, then wrap another layer of newspaper around it, and make it fairly thick to prevent frost damage.

(4) If you are in the north, have enough money and plenty of time, you can use a heating rod to raise the temperature appropriately. Of course, there is less sun in winter, so you can supplement light artificially using a fluorescent lamp (there is still a certain cost to this!).

III. How should pitcher plants be watered?

1. When to water

Pitcher plants have very strict requirements for water, and the watering time must be strictly controlled; you cannot water too frequently, nor can you fail to water. Just try to keep the soil moist. As for the watering time, water twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening; remember not to water at noon.

2. How to water

There are many ways to water, such as pouring, surface watering, spraying and immersion absorption. Pitcher plants are suited to growing in moist but relatively loose soil, so watering generally uses surface watering and immersion absorption.

Surface watering: pour water directly onto the soil, and try to avoid pouring it on the flowers and leaves.

Immersion absorption watering: to avoid the loss of nutrients in the soil, soak the pot in water and let the soil become moist.

3. Water quality requirements

Pitcher plants have relatively low requirements for water quality; as long as it is not very dirty and does not contain bacteria, ordinary water is fine. But if the immersion method is used often for watering, it will cause salt accumulation, and many yellow-white water stains will appear on the surface of the soil. Replace the surface soil in time.
