China is the earliest country in the world to cultivate chrysanthemums, and according to records, chrysanthemums everywhere in the world originated from China. In the Chaoshan region, besides ornamental chrysanthemums, many folk areas still preserve the historical tradition of growing medicinal and edible chrysanthemums. So, is there a profitable prospect for planting chrysanthemums in 2019? How much is the profit per mu? What are the planting time, methods and precautions?

I. Is there a profitable prospect for planting chrysanthemums in 2019? How much is the profit per mu?

1. Chrysanthemum planting prospects

Chrysanthemums on the market today are very diverse and quite different from the past. The wild chrysanthemums of before generally bloomed relatively small, and although the scent was much the same, today's chrysanthemums after research are not only yellow chrysanthemums but also come in some other colors, though their uses are much the same. The price of chrysanthemums has been rising continuously since 2013, and at present they can basically sell for about 50 yuan/kg, with higher-quality ones fetching an even higher price.

2. How much is the profit per mu from planting chrysanthemums?

As for the profit per mu, taking white chrysanthemum as an example, the cost is about 2000 yuan/mu: 2500 chrysanthemum seedlings are needed per mu, and the current market price of seedlings ranges from 0.12-0.45 yuan/plant, calculated at 0.2 yuan, the seedling cost is about 500 yuan; during the growing process, applying fertilizers such as farmyard manure requires 100 yuan/mu, irrigation water 150 yuan/mu, mulching film 30 yuan/mu, and producing each jin of fresh flowers requires a labor cost of 0.8-1 yuan, with land rent of 100-200 yuan/mu.

The income is about 7000 yuan/mu: the yield per mu is 2500-2800 jin of fresh flowers, and the current purchase price of fresh flowers (tai ju) is 2.8 yuan/jin, while golden silk imperial chrysanthemum (a high-end variety) is 3.2 yuan/jin, so the income can reach nearly 9000 yuan at most (golden silk imperial chrysanthemum).

Therefore, under scientific planting, calculated at current market prices, the profit should be 5000 yuan/mu.

Additional income: starting from the second year of planting, seedlings are propagated through division and cuttings, and 1 mu of old seedlings can plant 15-20 mu of new fields, meaning 1 mu of old seedlings at 2500 plants can produce at most 50,000 new seedlings; at the current seedling market price of 0.2 yuan/plant, selling seedlings externally can generate an income of 10,000 yuan/mu.

II. When is the planting time for chrysanthemums?

The specific time depends on which propagation method you choose. Generally, chrysanthemum planting includes division propagation and cutting propagation.

1. Division propagation: division is done in November after the chrysanthemums are harvested, cutting the chrysanthemum stems level with the ground, selecting robust, disease-free plants, digging out all their roots, and replanting them on a fertile plot, applying a layer of soil and manure, and keeping them warm through the winter. The following year in March-April, open up the manure and soil, water, and in April-May when the chrysanthemum seedlings grow to 15 cm high, dig out the whole plant, divide it into several plants, and immediately plant them in the field

2. Cutting propagation: the method of selecting mother plants for seed and covering them for winter is the same as the division method. In late April when the seedlings are 15-20 cm high, cut them along the ground, select from them sturdy seedlings more than 10 cm long, remove the lowest 2-3 leaves, and insert them into the cutting nursery bed at a row and plant spacing of 7×7 cm. Shade and keep moist, 20

III. What are the methods and precautions for planting chrysanthemums?

1. Land selection and preparation and propagation: choose a fertile, loose, well-drained plot. The cutting nursery land must also have a water source for convenient irrigation, and the planting site should be selected in a high, dry area. Apply base fertilizer as appropriate according to the original fertility of the land, and after plowing and raking level, make high beds 1-1.2 m wide and 25-30 cm high, with a bed spacing of 30 cm.

After everything is ready, choose a suitable propagation method and carry out propagation.

2. Field management:

① Intertillage and weeding: after planting, when there is no wilting in the afternoon, it means the seedlings have survived, and loosening the soil and weeding can begin. Generally carry out 3-4 times, and stop after budding. For mid-term weeding, use Shuangkekang for control; see the instructions for the method of use.

② Topdressing: when the plants grow vigorously after planting, apply about 1000 kg of thin manure water; when budding begins, apply another 2000 kg of the above fertilizer, plus 10-15 kg of superphosphate or use 2% superphosphate water spray as foliar topdressing.

③ Drainage and irrigation: after planting, if drought occurs, irrigation is needed to keep it moist to increase the survival rate. After survival, the soil needs to be on the dry side to promote root development and control excessive aboveground growth; at this time, if rain occurs, drain promptly to reduce moisture.

④ Topping: after the seedlings survive planting, when they are 15-20 cm high, choose a sunny day to top them, removing 1-2 cm of the stem tip to promote branching. After that, do it once every 2 weeks, for 3-4 times in a row, and stop after late July, otherwise there will be too many branches and the flowers will be too small.

⑤ Pest and disease control:

Leaf blight: also known as spot blight. The pathogen is a kind of fungus imperfectus, which can occur at all growth stages and is severe in rainy seasons. The lower leaves are affected first, and the diseased leaves show nearly round purplish-brown spots with grayish-white centers. Later, small black dots (acervuli) form on the spots. After the spots expand, the whole leaf dries up (without falling off). Control methods: control moisture in the early growth stage to prevent excessive growth and facilitate ventilation and light penetration; drain promptly after rain to reduce soil moisture; in the early stage of the disease, promptly remove diseased leaves, burn them in a centralized manner, and spray with 1:1:100 Bordeaux mixture or 50% mancozeb 800-1000 times solution.

Aphids: they begin to occur in late April and can be killed by spraying 40% dimethoate emulsifiable concentrate 200 times solution or 25% acetamiprid 1500-2000 times solution.
