Can Guzmania (Vriesea) Be Kept Indoors? Care Methods and Precautions
Guzmania is an idiom we learned in textbooks as children, carrying the meaning of good luck throughout the year. But actually, Guzmania is also the name of a plant, named because it blooms only once a year, with red flowers growing at the top of the stalk or crown. Because of its auspicious meaning and high ornamental value, many people have started growing it at home, so how should Guzmania be cared for? What should be noted? Can it be placed indoors?
I. How to care for Guzmania?
1. Soil
Guzmania is suited to growing in loose, fertile, well-aerated and well-draining acidic soil. Usually we can use a mix of leaf mold and river sand for growing it.
2. Watering
Guzmania suits a humid environment. During normal watering, there is no need for the soil to dry out; maintaining 80% moisture is sufficient. On cloudy and rainy days, watering is usually not needed. In winter, lightly misting its leaves is enough. However, it is best not to use tap water; purified water can be used instead.
3. Light
Under sufficient light, Guzmania turns a more vivid red, so at least about 5 hours of light should be ensured normally, but prolonged direct sun exposure is not advisable.
4. Temperature
The most suitable temperature for Guzmania's growth is between 15°C and 22°C, and it should not go below 10°C at minimum, otherwise it will cause the leaves to turn yellow.

5. Fertilizing
During Guzmania's growing period, fertilizer should be applied about once every half month to ensure sufficient nutrients. Fermented cake fertilizer or rice-washing water can be used.
II. What should be noted when growing Guzmania?
1. Ventilation
Besides liking a warm, humid environment with ample sunlight, Guzmania also needs to be kept in well-ventilated conditions, otherwise its growth and appearance will be affected, such as flowers not turning red, leaves drooping, and the plant being stunted. Especially when the air humidity is above 80%, ventilation should be strengthened even more to prevent disease.
2. Water quality
Guzmania likes to live in acidic water, so a water pH between 5.5-6.5 is generally suitable. If the pH is above 7, it may cause heart rot and root rot. In addition, Guzmania does not like environments with too high a salt content, especially sodium salts. Tap water is usually hard water containing large amounts of chlorine and sodium, so it is not suitable for use. When watering Guzmania, it is also not advisable to water too much, otherwise it will cause root rot.
3. Pest and disease control
The causes of Guzmania's pests and diseases are generally high temperature, high humidity, or poor ventilation. If scale insects, red spider mites, etc. appear, omethoate can be sprayed; if Fusarium appears, carbendazim can be sprayed. However, spraying should be done outdoors to prevent indoor environmental pollution.
III. Can Guzmania be placed indoors?
Placing Guzmania indoors is entirely fine. It not only represents festive and other beautiful meanings; feng shui masters believe that placing it in a suitable spot in the living room also carries the meaning of gathering wealth and good luck. Moreover, as a green plant, Guzmania can also carry out photosynthesis, absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, with effects that aid sleep and purify the air.
IV. How much does one pot of Guzmania cost?
The market price of Guzmania varies, determined by appearance and quality. Generally, in flower markets, the price of Guzmania is around 200 yuan, with the actual market price being the main reference.
