Clivia is a relatively long-lived ornamental flower and one of China's top ten famous flowers. It symbolizes nobility and good fortune, making it one of the must-have potted choices for many households. It is not only beautiful, adding a touch of new color to the home, but is also considered one of the easier flowers to keep alive. If you buy Clivia seeds to grow yourself, is the price expensive? When do Clivia seeds generally mature? What are the planting methods?

I. Are Ornamental Clivia Flower Seeds Expensive?

Clivia is a flower with extremely high ornamental value and is loved by many flower enthusiasts. If you want to grow Clivia yourself, the first thing you need to do is buy Clivia seeds. There is a fairly large range of Clivia seed varieties on the market, and prices vary. Generally speaking, prices are basically 1-2 yuan per seed, with expensive ones at 3-4 yuan per seed. You can compare prices across different channels before buying.

If you buy by the jin, the price is relatively cheaper, at around 400-plus yuan per jin, and one jin of Clivia seeds contains more than 1,000 seeds.

II. When Do Clivia Seeds Mature?

Clivia seeds take a relatively long time to mature, and different varieties differ as well. You can feel with your hands: if the seed coat feels soft to the touch, it can be separated from the seed, which proves the seed is ripe and ready to be picked. Generally, after shelling the seeds, you can plant them immediately, or store them for a period before planting, but remember to cut the fruit off together with the "arrow" and store it in a ventilated, cool place.

Clivia Seed Maturity Time Table

VarietyMaturity Time
Fine-leaf CliviaAbout one year to one and a half years
Nodding CliviaAbout 9 months
Stemmed CliviaAbout half a year after pollination
Wonder CliviaAbout 5 months
Marsh CliviaGenerally about one year

III. Clivia Seed Planting Methods

1. Seed Selection

(1) Choose a healthy mother plant

Why is it said that if the Clivia mother plant is healthy, the seed germination rate will be good and the flowers that grow will also be good? This is just like genetic inheritance: with good genes, it will naturally grow well in the absence of mutation, so choosing a mother plant that is free of disease, grows well, and is beautiful and robust is very important.

(2) Choose well-developed seeds

Generally, seeds from plants that bloom in early spring and mature in autumn have a relatively good germination rate. It is worth noting that mature seeds do not mean every single one is good. Some seeds are affected by environmental factors and do not develop fully, lacking an obvious micropyle, which makes fusion difficult during pollination, resulting in a low germination rate, or the seedlings that grow are unhealthy and the plants are not robust.

2. Seed Soaking

Why soak Clivia seeds? Because Clivia seeds are fairly hard in texture and the seed coat is very tough, soaking them in warm boiled water allows the seed coat and the seed endosperm to gradually expand. The soaking time is about 1 day to 1.5 days, after which the seeds are taken out and placed in a cool spot. If growing at home, the treated seeds can grow new radicles in about half a month.

Of course, you can also soak and treat them with a salt solution; this way, under suitable temperature and humidity, the radicles emerge faster.

3. Seed Planting

To germinate Clivia seeds, you must first spread a thin layer of crushed wood shavings on the bottom, then place the seeds on top, arranged evenly, and cover with another layer on top. When planting, choose a flower pot with good water permeability so that watering will not accumulate too much water.

4. Seed Growth Temperature

Clivia seeds like a warm, humid environment, and a temperature of 18-24°C is most suitable for Clivia seed growth.

5. Watering

Watering Clivia seeds also requires skill. The picked seeds must first be dried, then given a small amount of water; otherwise, too much water will cause rot, and the survival rate will naturally not be high.

6. Management After Germination

When the radicles of Clivia seeds have grown tender shoots of 2-3 cm at around one month, we can switch them to soil cultivation. Likewise, moisten the soil first, then insert the radicles into the soil and water with a spray bottle.
