The Double Ninth Festival has passed, but chrysanthemum viewing continues. As one of China's ten most famous flowers, the chrysanthemum symbolizes longevity and good fortune. The chrysanthemum was also the favorite of the ancient poet Tao Yuanming, as shown in the verse “Picking chrysanthemums by the eastern fence, leisurely gazing at the southern mountains.” Many people think chrysanthemums can only be propagated by cuttings, but in fact they can also be grown and propagated from seed. So how much does a jin of chrysanthemum seeds cost on the market? When is the best time to sow them? What are the planting methods?

I. How much does a jin of chrysanthemum seeds cost?

The price of chrysanthemum seeds is affected by different varieties, purchase quantity, that year's yield, the degree of market supply, and different batches. It is generally around 160 yuan per jin, but the fluctuations can be quite large. There are also some counterfeit goods circulating on the market, so everyone can compare several purchasing channels before making a decision.

II. When is the best time to sow chrysanthemum seeds?

Different varieties of chrysanthemums have different planting times. For example, garland chrysanthemum seeds can be planted in both spring and autumn; daisy seeds are generally planted during the transition from summer to autumn; five-colored chrysanthemum seeds can be planted from February to May and from August to October; yellow chrysanthemum seeds can be planted all year round.

III. Planting methods for chrysanthemum seeds

There are many types of chrysanthemums, and different varieties of chrysanthemum seeds differ somewhat in how they are planted. Here we mainly introduce the planting methods for sweet cornflower seeds and yellow chrysanthemum seeds.

1. Planting method for yellow chrysanthemum seeds

There is no set planting time for yellow chrysanthemums, but there are still certain temperature requirements. They can only be planted when the temperature is above 15°C, so the sowing time differs by region. The main planting points are as follows:

(1) The temperature during the seedling stage must be suitable. If sowing in early spring, a range of 23-25°C is generally the most suitable;

(2) Yellow chrysanthemum seeds must be properly disinfected before sowing, and remember not to expose them to light during the germination period. After sowing, cover them with a layer of thin, breathable newspaper, and keep the soil moist at all times, but do not water too much to prevent rot;

(3) When preparing the soil, base fertilizer must be applied in advance. Organic fertilizer is a relatively good choice, spread on top of the soil. We generally choose a plot measuring 30cm*100cm*20m, and ditches must be dug to prevent excessive water accumulation on rainy days that cannot drain away;

(4) After the chrysanthemum seedlings are planted, they must be watered regularly to keep the soil moist and promote the growth of yellow chrysanthemums;

(5) During the growth period of yellow chrysanthemums, the two major tasks of weeding and fertilizing must be done well to prevent weeds from growing densely and affecting nutrient absorption. During the vigorous growth period, apply additional fertilizer once more.

(6) Harvest at the appropriate time. In hot weather, wait until the weather is slightly cooler before picking.

2. Planting method for sweet cornflower seeds

(1) For sweet cornflower seeds to bloom well, it is generally better to sow them in autumn and winter, because rising temperatures in spring affect flowering. The seeds should be stored in a cool place to prevent spoilage;

(2) The sowing soil should be fertile and loose, watered appropriately, and kept moist;

(3) Sweet cornflower seeds should be covered with a thin layer of soil (about 3 times the length of the seed), gently pressed down, and covered with straw. Once the seeds germinate, remove the straw. When a certain number of leaves (6-7) have grown, they can be transplanted. Chrysanthemum seedlings that survive transplanting must also be well managed with watering, fertilizing, and so on.
