Is Desert Rose Poisonous? A Guide to Growing It in Pots
Many people mistakenly think that Desert Rose is a rose growing in the desert, but it actually is not; it merely grows in areas close to deserts, and when it blooms, its colors are as gorgeous as those of roses. Desert Rose symbolizes tenacious vitality and is loved by many friends. Moreover, as a flowering ornamental plant, its flowering period is very long, making it very suitable for growing in pots at home. So is the tenacious Desert Rose poisonous? What are its growing methods?

I. Is Desert Rose poisonous?
1. Is Desert Rose poisonous?
Just like the thorny rose, beautiful things always have two sides. Desert Rose belongs to the Apocynaceae family and is indeed somewhat toxic. Its sap in particular is highly toxic; if accidentally ingested, it can cause symptoms such as rapid heartbeat and difficulty breathing. However, the sap of Desert Rose tastes extremely bitter, so if it is accidentally ingested, it generally will not be swallowed.
2. Can Desert Rose be kept in the bedroom?
Desert Rose is a potted flowering plant. Many people want to grow it in the bedroom to decorate the environment, but it is also toxic. Can it be kept in the bedroom?
Generally, we do not recommend keeping it in the bedroom for two reasons:
First, according to the growth habits of Desert Rose, it is a light-loving ornamental flowering plant. If it is kept in the bedroom without sunlight for a long time, it may fail to bloom and its leaves may become pale in color.
Second, Desert Rose is toxic. Although this does not affect normal care, households with children can easily have cases of accidental ingestion or touching, and the bedroom is a place for rest, so it is not recommended to place it there.
II. What are the growing methods for Desert Rose?
1. Give Desert Rose sufficient light
For Desert Rose to grow well, it must be given sufficient light. It can be kept outdoors or on a balcony for a long time. Even in summer, it does not need to be moved indoors for shade, which shows that its vitality is very vigorous and it is especially suitable for lazy gardeners. The more light there is, the better Desert Rose blooms and the more brilliant its colors become.
2. Keep the potting soil of Desert Rose moist
Desert Rose is drought-tolerant, but if it is to bloom on schedule and maintain the number of blooms, it cannot lack water. Specifically, determine the amount and frequency of watering according to the moisture level of the potting soil. Usually, just keep the potting soil moist. Water thoroughly each time, and wait until it dries out completely before watering again. In winter, watering once a month is generally enough.
3. Place it in a ventilated environment with suitable temperature
The most suitable growing temperature for Desert Rose is around 25°C. Although it can also grow in high-temperature environments, it grows even better under such conditions. Usually, pay attention to placing it in a ventilated environment to prevent pest problems.
4. Repot at the right time
Repotting is done to improve the plant shape and growth of Desert Rose. Generally, repot outdoors every spring. After replanting, water thoroughly and place it in a semi-shaded spot until the leaves recover, then resume normal care.
5. Fertilizing
Usually, when fertilizing Desert Rose, you can choose dilute fertilizer water, but once flower buds appear, stop fertilizing.
In addition to the above five points, also promptly prevent pest and disease attacks. Common diseases of Desert Rose are root rot and leaf spot, and a common pest is scale insects. Once they occur, they may cause a large number of leaves to fall off, and in severe cases the whole plant may die, so timely prevention and treatment are essential.
