[Symptoms] The leaves are affected, showing a yellow-green mosaic pattern that gradually develops into streaks and blotches; in severe cases the leaves turn yellow and become distorted; the bulbs grow poorly and become smaller; the flowers are broken in color, shrunken and dull; the plants appear stunted.

[Pathogen and disease pattern] This is a viral disease, and the pathogen is hyacinth mosaic virus (HMV). According to reports from abroad, tulip breaking virus, narcissus mosaic virus, tobacco rattle virus, lily latent virus, rohdea mosaic virus and cucumber mosaic virus can all cause harm to hyacinth. Hyacinth mosaic virus is transmitted by mechanical friction, and the potato aphid can also transmit viruses from other virus-source plants to hyacinth.

[Control methods]

1. Promptly pull out diseased plants and avoid propagating from virus-carrying bulbs.

2. Eliminate other virus-source plants in hyacinth growing areas.

3. Strengthen control of aphids and other vector pests.

Hyacinth mosaic virus symptoms and control

Symptoms of hyacinth mosaic virus

In the early stage of the disease, symptoms are mild, the leaves lose their gloss, and tiny spots appear, gradually forming brown streaks or blotches. In severe cases the entire leaf turns yellow and becomes distorted, the plant is stunted, there are no flowers or only small flowers at flowering time, and the bulbs degenerate.

Pathogen analysis

The main pathogen of mosaic disease is mosaic virus, which mutates at a high temperature of 68°C. In addition, viruses from other flowers such as tulip, narcissus and lily can all cause mosaic disease in hyacinth.

Disease pattern

Under natural conditions the virus infects hyacinth. This virus is spread mechanically; infection can occur when branches and leaves come into contact with the pathogen, and if pests and diseases occur, such as nematodes and aphids, they can all transmit it.

Control methods

Mosaic disease cannot be cured completely and can only be prevented. Put in a little extra care during maintenance, and you will have a little less worry.

① Before planting, select bulbs from disease-free plants for planting, and disinfect the bulbs before planting.

② Disinfect the soil before planting, and water with Bordeaux mixture solution.

③ Promptly kill insect pests and eliminate the pathogen.

④ Once small spots are found on the leaves, immediately spray a chemical agent to kill the virus, and promptly remove the diseased leaves to avoid cross-infection.

⑤ When planting, do not put them in the same pot as other plants; care for them separately. If there are many plants at home, be careful not to let hyacinth be near tulips, narcissus, lilies and other plants, so as to avoid pathogens spreading to each other and causing disease.

Hyacinth mosaic virus

     [Distribution] Shanghai area.

[Symptoms] In the early stage it is mild mosaic, and later it develops into streaks and blotches; in severe cases the leaves turn yellow and become distorted, the plant is stunted, and the bulbs become smaller; the flowers are broken in color, shrunken and dull.

[Pathogen] Hyacinth mosaic disease is caused by hyacinth mosaic virus (HMV). The virus is a filamentous particle with a length of 700-725 nanometers.

[Disease pattern] The thermal death point of hyacinth mosaic virus is 68°C. Hyacinth mosaic disease is transmitted mechanically. In addition, the potato aphid can transmit viruses from other virus-source plants to hyacinth, or from hyacinth to plants such as Ornithogalum.

[Control methods] Pull out diseased plants; do not keep bulbs from virus-carrying plants for propagation; in addition, strengthening control of aphids and other vector insects can also achieve a certain control effect.
