Hyacinth prefers a warm, humid winter, a cool and slightly dry summer, and a sunny environment. Well-drained, loose, fertile sandy loam is suitable for its growth. It has the habit of rooting in autumn, sending up new shoots in February and March of early spring, blooming in April and May, and having the plants wither and enter dormancy in June.

Hyacinths can be planted outdoors or in pots, and are also suitable for hydroponic culture when grown at home.

(1) Pot culture

For the potting soil, a growing medium made of leaf mold, garden soil and river sand in a 1/3 ratio each can be used. The planting depth should be such that the shoulder of the bulb is level with the soil surface. After planting, water thoroughly, place in a cold room, and cover with dry sandy soil, with the thickness of the covering such that the flower pot is no longer visible. Keep the room temperature at 4°C to 6°C to encourage root development. When the flower stem begins to grow, move the pot to a warm place and gradually raise the temperature to 22°C; it will then bloom in March and April. In June, when the temperature gradually grows hotter and the leaves turn yellow and withered, knock the bulb out of the pot and store it in a ventilated, cool place indoors.

Hyacinth likes a sunny and relatively humid environment, so during the growth and development period it should be placed in a place with ample sunlight. At the same time, the potting soil should be kept moist at all times. After the flower scape emerges, spray water on the leaf surface 1 to 2 times a day to increase air humidity. Apply 1 to 2 times of well-rotted dilute liquid fertilizer before and after flowering; fertilizing after flowering helps promote the growth of bulblets.

(2) Water culture

Growing hyacinths in water is basically the same as water-culturing Chinese narcissus. In October to November, select healthy, plump bulbs and place them upright in a shallow basin, surround them with some pebbles, pour in a small amount of clean water, and first place them in a cool, dark place (preferably covering the basin surface with black cloth) to encourage rooting. After rooting, gradually move the water basin to a place with light. At a temperature of 18°C, it will bloom in about two months. After flowering, the bulbs can be planted in soil, and after the leaves wither, they can be dug up and stored. During water culture, change the water once every 2 to 3 days, and add a small amount of charcoal to the water to absorb impurities and disinfect and prevent rot. When changing the water, do not move the root system; pour the water in from the edge. If the bulbs are placed in a shallow basin and then decorated with some smooth, colorful small pebbles, the effect is even better.

For growing on a home desk or table, a specially made wide-mouthed glass bottle can also be used for water culture. This kind of container is transparent, and in the clear water you can view the bulb, leaves, flowers and roots; among the clear water the white roots float upright, adding even more ornamental interest. The specific method is: place the bulb at the cup-shaped mouth of the glass bottle, fill the bottle with water, with the amount of water limited to the water surface being close to the base of the bulb, and be careful never to wet the bulb. After the bulb takes root, the roots will naturally extend toward the bottom of the bottle; then add a little charcoal to absorb impurities in the water and prevent the water from becoming foul. Place it in a cool, dark place indoors, keep the room temperature at 10°C to 15°C, and after about one month the root system can grow out. After the roots have grown fully, move it to a semi-light place, control the temperature at 18°C, add water frequently, and do not fertilize. After the leaves grow out, place it in a place with ample light. After the stem emerges, change the water once every 2 to 3 days. After the flowers fade, plant the bulb in potting soil; after the leaves wither, dig it out and store it well for replanting.

To propagate hyacinths, the bulblet division method is usually used.
