Reviving a Dying Pothos, Plus Large-Leaf Pothos Care Methods, Precautions and Cuttings
Pothos likes scattered light and dislikes direct sunlight; it is best to receive 4 hours of scattered light per day. It can safely overwinter at a room temperature above 10°C, and can grow normally at a room temperature above 20°C. It likes a warm, humid environment. In autumn and winter, the amount of watering should be strictly controlled according to room temperature.
Before heating starts, temperatures are lower, the soil of the plant evaporates more slowly, so watering should be reduced. In winter, water that has been left to stand for 1 day is better for watering; water that is too cold can easily damage the roots. Before the spring growing season, apply a liquid fertilizer such as urea about every 10 days. In autumn and winter, plants mostly grow slowly or even stop growing, so fertilizing should be reduced.
Propagation is mainly by cuttings. Cut a 15-30 cm stem, remove the leaves from the bottom 2-3 nodes, and plant directly in a pot with potting soil, 3-5 stems per pot, keeping the soil and air moist; in a semi-shaded environment at 25°C, roots and shoots can appear in about 20 days.
Precautions for caring for pothos in winter:
1. Water pothos correctly
Many pothos plants are killed by watering in winter. If your home has heating or underfloor heating, then water as usual in winter and keep the potting soil moist. But if your home has no heating, then watering should be appropriately reduced, and you should not water unless the soil is dry.
2. Pothos can get some sun in winter
Although pothos cannot be placed in the sun to bake, winter is an exceptional season; winter light is weak, so at this time you should place pothos by a south-facing window or on a balcony, in a spot with good sunlight, and the pothos will grow better.
3. Control the temperature suitable for pothos growth
At a temperature above 10°C, pothos can safely overwinter, and at a temperature above 20°C, pothos can grow normally.
4. Pothos does not need fertilizing in winter
In winter, pothos basically stops growing, so it does not need much fertilizer, and pothos can go without fertilizing in winter.
If a pothos has died, can it still be revived?
1. Leaves gone but the main stem still there (can survive)
If all the leaves of the pothos have fallen off, or only a few scattered leaves remain, while the main stem still looks alive, then there is still hope of saving it! You can move the greenery to a warmer place and wait for it to revive.
2. Both leaves and main stem are rotted (cannot survive)
In this case, it can generally be judged that it cannot be revived. This is because it usually means the roots have already rotted, so it is suggested that you should no longer think about rescue measures.
Pothos is a very easy plant to grow and has a strong ability to adapt to the environment, but winter is the hardest season for pothos, so the pothos at home must usually be well cared for, and in winter you can also give the pothos more sun, which can further speed up its growth.
Care Methods and Precautions for Large-Leaf Pothos
When pothos is mentioned, flower lovers are surely familiar with it. Pothos is a common green plant in homes and offices. It has vigorous vitality and well-developed leaves, and can also absorb harmful substances such as benzene and formaldehyde, so it is very popular. The pothos we usually see generally has ordinary-sized leaves with nothing special about them, but have you ever seen a pothos with very large leaves that is very tall and robust? This kind of pothos is actually called large-leaf pothos, and it is a variety of pothos. Its leaves themselves are much larger than those of ordinary pothos, but if you want to grow large-leaf pothos well, you still have to take good care of it.
You should choose a loose, slightly acidic to neutral sandy loam rich in organic matter. You can mix leaf mold, red loam soil, rapeseed cake and bone meal in a 7:2:1:1 ratio. The temperature suitable for the growth of large-leaf pothos is above 20°C. In winter, it should be kept above 10°C for it to overwinter safely.
Light
Large-leaf pothos does not have very high light requirements. But if it is placed in a dark place for a long time, it will cause the leaves to shrink and the internodes to lengthen. In summer, it should be placed in a semi-shaded environment, and in winter, light should be appropriately increased to strengthen photosynthesis.
Water
Large-leaf pothos likes a relatively humid environment. You should spray more water around it and at the rooting area. But do not water too much, so as to avoid water accumulation and root rot. It is enough to keep the soil moist.
Fertilizer
Apply Yehong Shiguang flower microbial inoculant once a month, which can significantly increase leaf thickness and brightness, making the plant grow more healthily; improve the plant's resistance to pests and diseases, and promote plant growth. After the beginning of winter, mainly apply foliar fertilizer.
Precautions
Because it grows relatively quickly, it should be pruned in a timely manner to keep the plant shape graceful;
In summer, when the weather is dry and hot, more water should be sprayed, and attention should be paid to ventilation;
Large-leaf pothos is easily infected by pests such as scale insects and red spider mites. Pay more attention at ordinary times; when there are few, remove and burn them directly, and when there are many, apply insecticide promptly.
How to take cuttings of large-leaf pothos:
Step 1: Cut off the stems of the large-leaf pothos and first propagate them in water for two days, which helps rooting. Step 2: Take the stems out of the water; some will have grown a few roots, and then propagating them in soil this way makes rooting faster. This is also a little trick. Step 3: Prepare a shallow pot, put a plastic bag over it, place a layer of nutrient soil inside, put the pothos stems in, and then water thoroughly. Then tie the opening of the plastic bag. The purpose of doing this is to maintain a certain temperature. If the temperature is high, it is also fine not to use a plastic bag. Step 4: After one week, when the pothos has sprouted, cover it with a shallow layer of thin soil.
