① Main symptoms: This is a common disease that seriously harms money trees, also known as decay disease, and is the most common disease of money trees. In mild cases, the leaves turn yellow; in severe cases, the entire plant dies. The disease mainly occurs on the main trunk of the money tree. In the early stage of the disease, the affected part shows small water-soaked brown spots, which gradually expand into large spots; the affected part becomes soft and slightly raised; in severe cases, the spots merge into patches. The affected part gradually dries out and becomes sunken, densely covered with relatively large black dots - pycnidia. The diseased bark eventually rots and becomes hemp-like. Under humid conditions, white filamentous substances ooze from the black dots. The branches and leaves on the main trunk of the affected plant grow poorly; the branches are thin and short, and the leaves on them fade in color and wilt; in severe cases, the branches and leaves wither and die.

② Disease pattern: The pathogenic fungus overwinters in the remnants of diseased branches and trunks or in diseased parts; conidia are spread by wind and rain, splashing water droplets, or pruning tools. Money trees with weak growth vigor, especially those rented out for display, are most susceptible to decay disease. The root system of money trees is extremely underdeveloped; if fertilizer and water are not applied in time, the tree vigor is easily weakened; wounds are easily caused during transportation; overhead watering all favor the occurrence of the disease.

③ Prevention and treatment methods:

a. Keep the cultivation environment dry and cool, and pay attention to disinfecting the growing medium and the site.

b. After semi-finished products are taken out of the cabinet and unloaded to the handling shed, spray the top of the money tree with Procymidone to prevent damage from Botrytis cinerea.

c. Before planting, use a sharp knife to cut off the bruised and rotten tissue at the top of the main root, then spray the wound with Procymidone, let it dry, and plant immediately.

d. One week after planting, the medium in the pot gradually dries, callus tissue has formed, and new roots have begun to grow. Spray the bare trunk of the money tree with Previcur, Anke, or zinc manganese metalaxyl (Ridomil-MZ), so that the liquid flows along the trunk into the pot soil. After that, use Anke, Terrazole, Ridomil, or Ethylicin as fungicides in rotation once a week.

e. If Pythium is active, spray with Previcur, Terrazole, Ridomil, or Ethylicin; the efficacy generally lasts about two weeks. If the weather is unfavorable, spray again with a different agent to prevent the development of resistance. If any rotting plant is found during this period, it should be discarded immediately.

(2) Leaf blight

Leaf blight is a disease that frequently occurs during the growth, development, and ornamental display of money trees.

Prevention and treatment methods:

a. Remove diseased leaves promptly when found and destroy them.

b. During the cultivation of money trees, maintenance and management should be strengthened, with timely watering and fertilizing. Each growing season, 2-3 applications of foliar fertilizer can be given, such as 0.5% nitrogen potassium dihydrogen phosphate or 200 times dilution of double-effect micro-fertilizer.

c. Before seedlings are transported from the south to the north, spray protective fungicides on the leaves, such as 70% chlorothalonil 800 times dilution, or 18% copper multi-mix wettable powder 200 times dilution, or 50% Tuzet 600 times dilution. After arriving in the north, plant them in time, strengthen fertilizer and water management, and prevent dehydration and fertilizer loss. When cultivating money trees in southern regions, starting from the rainy season, spray 50% carbendazim 800 times dilution, or 70% chlorothalonil 800 times dilution, or 75% thiophanate-methyl 1500 times dilution every 10-15 days.

(3) Pests

The main pest is the sugarcane flat moth (Opogona sacchari). This insect was first discovered in China, and it is mainly the larvae that harm money trees.

Prevention and treatment methods:

a. First, attention should be paid to prevention. When purchasing money trees, be sure to select carefully and choose pest-free and disease-free plants.

b. During cultivation, check frequently to detect pest infestations early. Once damage is found, carry out control promptly.

c. Clean up damaged parts. When pests or diseases are found, clean them up first. Remove insect frass, crush larvae promptly when found, and remove discolored and dead parts after damage.

d. Summer is the peak period for the sugarcane flat moth, so extra attention should be paid. Insecticides can be sprayed for protection; 2000 times dilution of 20% fenvalerate-malathion emulsifiable concentrate or 2500 times dilution of 20% fenvalerate emulsifiable concentrate gives better results.

e. For severely affected plants, remove them promptly and dispose of them by deep burial or stripping off all the bark and exposing it to full sun, killing any insects found in time.

Prevention and treatment of common diseases of money trees

The common diseases of money trees are root (stem) rot and leaf blight.

I. Root (stem) rot   This is a common disease that seriously harms money trees, also known as decay disease

Symptoms: The stem base to the roots turn dark brown, rot, and young leaves lose vitality and wither.

Prevention and treatment methods: (1) Keep the cultivation environment dry and cool, and pay attention to disinfecting the growing medium and the site;

(2) After semi-finished products are taken out of the cabinet and unloaded to the handling shed, spray the top of the money tree with 1000-1500 times dilution of Bi-Jun-Sha to prevent damage from Botrytis cinerea; (3) Before planting, use a sharp knife to cut off the bruised and rotten tissue at the top of the main root, then spray the wound with 300 times dilution of Genfuxiao, let it dry, and plant immediately; (4) One week after planting, the medium in the pot gradually dries, callus tissue has formed, and new roots have begun to grow. Spray the bare trunk of the money tree with Previcur or Ridomil-MZ, so that the liquid flows along the trunk into the pot soil. After that, use Anke, carbendazim, Ridomil, or Ethylicin as fungicides in rotation once a week; (5) If Pythium is active, spray with Pen-Ke-Jun or Ridomil; the efficacy generally lasts about two weeks. If the weather remains unfavorable, spray again with a different agent to prevent the development of resistance. If any rotting plant is found during this period, it should be discarded immediately.

II. Leaf blight

Symptoms: In the early stage, dark brown spots appear, with gray or dark brown sunscald-like lesions inside; on older lesions, black powder can be seen.

Prevention and treatment methods: (1) Remove diseased leaves promptly when found and destroy them; (2) During the cultivation of money trees, maintenance and management should be strengthened, with timely watering and fertilizing. Each growing season, 2-3 applications of foliar fertilizer can be given, such as 0.5% nitrogen potassium dihydrogen phosphate or 200 times dilution of double-effect micro-fertilizer; (3) Before seedlings are transported from the south to the north, spray protective fungicides on the leaves, such as 1000-1500 times dilution of Bi-Jun-Sha, or 18% copper multi-mix wettable powder 200 times dilution, or 50% Tuzet 600 times dilution. In addition, the main pest is the sugarcane flat moth. This insect is a new record in China, and it is mainly the larvae that harm money trees; it can also harm poinsettia, Polyscias, Schefflera, and Hawaiian palm.
