Taro, commonly known as yunai or taro, can be cultivated in both paddy fields and dry land, giving high and stable yields. The yield of taro is generally around 3000 jin per mu. The returns are higher than those of corn and wheat.

Taro

Growing water taro has very high water and fertilizer requirements. If the growing requirements for water taro are not met, the taro will grow weakly during the growing period, produce few corms at harvest, and the results will be small, so the yield will be low. So how can you grow high-yielding water taro? See what the experts below have to say.

Taro

Water taro is generally cultivated in paddy fields and low-lying land. Water taro grows in moist soil and requires fertile, loose soil, and is grown on raised beds.

When preparing the land for water taro, apply 1500-2000 kg of human manure and urine per mu as base fertilizer, turn it into the soil and rake it level, maintaining a water layer 10-20 cm deep. With a row spacing of 40 cm and a plant spacing of 26-29 cm, when planting, move the seed taro from slightly farther away to the planting point so as not to bend the root system, with a planting depth of 3-6 cm.

In the water taro field, after planting and about 10 days later when the plants have survived, drain the field water and carry out field drying, tread the weeds into the soil, and let the sunlight shine directly until fine cracks appear in the field soil, so as to raise the soil temperature and promote rooting.

After field drying, apply one topdressing, with 1000-1500 kg of human manure and urine per mu. After application, irrigate with 15-20 cm of water. After 15-20 days, drain the field water, and pour 1500 kg of manure water per mu. At 13-16 cm from between the plants, loosen the soil with a hoe and mound it up to the base of the plants to a height of 14-16 cm. After mounding, irrigate to maintain 3-6 cm.

Taro

After another 15-20 days, drain the field water and apply the third topdressing, with the same amount as the second topdressing, and carry out a second mounding, about 33 cm high. After mounding, irrigate with 14-16 cm of water. Apart from temporary draining of the field water for field drying, fertilizing, and mounding, the taro field must not be short of water until the water is cut off after early September, keeping the soil moist until harvest.
