Xinwei Town: Growing red-fleshed guavas to help shake off poverty and become better off

In recent years, Xinwei Town has earnestly promoted the cultivation of specialty agriculture and actively introduced a specialty fruit - the red-fleshed guava - making it a major feature of local agricultural development and a new path for farmers to become better off.

On March 2, in the orchard of Enyou Ecological Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Co., Ltd. in Xinwei Town, reporters saw rows of guava trees about 1 m tall, growing well with green foliage, and every tree already laden with fruit. Company general manager Liang Youchang, who was busy picking fruit, told reporters that these red-fleshed guavas are an improved fruit variety introduced and cultivated from elsewhere, and because of their rich nutrition, early fruiting, high yield and high market prices, they have now become one of the specialty fruit varieties grown by the Gongyi Village Committee of Xinwei Town.

The red-fleshed guava was introduced and planted by Liang Youchang starting in May last year. Now the fruit has entered the market one after another and is very popular with consumers. With large-scale planting and a bumper harvest of red-fleshed guavas, it will become a major feature of local agriculture. During the interview, Liang Youchang revealed to us his original intention of returning home to plant guavas. He said: "In the past, young people in our rural areas went out to work, causing more and more farmland to be abandoned. In order to change the face of the countryside, make farmland better realize its value and raise farmers' incomes, I decided to come back and support the development of my hometown."

It is understood that guava planting has now become one of the major poverty-alleviation industries in Xinwei Town. Under the guidance and support of the local Party committee and government, Liang Youchang set up Enyou Ecological Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Co., Ltd. to demonstrate and promote new varieties and new technologies, provide growers with services such as fruit tree seedlings, technical guidance and sales, and encourage surrounding farmers to plant guavas, Taiwan green jujubes and other fruits to increase their incomes and become better off.
