A farmer in Jinan has been growing strawberries for more than ten years, but this year his strawberries ran into serious trouble, and he had no choice but to pull up all the seedlings. Asking the farmer revealed that the greenhouse strawberries in the local area were all in the same situation: nine out of ten greenhouses had Phytophthora disease. If the seedlings were not replaced, there would be no yield this year. So what exactly caused the large-scale death of the strawberry seedlings?

After an on-site inspection, experts found that the strawberry seedlings the farmers chose were not healthy, and that the cultivation model was unreasonable, with especially high humidity. The amount of water used for irrigation was especially large, and the strawberry seedlings were all soaking in water. This caused the spread of red stele root rot and anthracnose in these strawberries.

When watering, it is enough to meet the strawberry's water supply needs. At planting time, the temperature is around 30 degrees, and when the air temperature is especially high, transpiration is very fast. It transpires water from the leaves, and the roots cannot take up water fast enough, so wilting occurs.

We need to change the watering method: instead of watering from the roots, use misting from outside the root zone to replenish water. Many farmers, when they see strawberries wilting, think the roots are short of water and hurry to water them, but this is often the biggest misunderstanding.

To avoid another disastrous die-off of strawberry seedlings, our experts gave some suggestions: first, choose healthy plants that do not carry pathogens. Before planting strawberry seedlings, the seedlings on the seedbed must be disinfected; dip the roots first, then transplant.

There is also the issue of continuous planting in the field year after year, and the problem of continuous cropping obstacles must be solved. The soil must be disinfected; metalaxyl-M and fludioxonil can be used. When planting, the root system must be fully spread out, and watering must be reasonable; do not blindly flood-irrigate.
