The season has come around again, and many people have long since started planting corn. There are more and more varieties of corn, enough to make your eyes dazzle. There are strawberry corn, sweet corn, colorful corn, purple corn, glutinous corn, black corn, and starch corn grown specifically to feed pigs, and so on. But my favorite to eat is still sweet corn and glutinous corn.

For corn planting, first prepare the land by plowing, then form large ridges. Choose a plot of medium to upper fertility that has been properly plowed, with stubble removed and harrowed fine; flat land and low-lying land are both fine. On the basis of the original ridges with a ridge spacing of 0.5 m, form large ridges, that is, combine two ridges into one row with a row spacing of 1 m. A ridge surface width of about 0.7 m is fairly suitable.

Corn has a relatively short growing period, and during that period it requires warmth and plenty of rain. So large-scale planting generally starts in March. Before sowing, it is recommended to soak the seeds in warm water. Use 2 parts boiling water and 1 part cold water, at a temperature of about 55°C, and soak the corn seeds for 8-12 hours. Spread them out to dry in the sun, then sow. This method can speed up the seed water absorption process and can also kill the smut fungus spores attached to the seed surface.

Generally, corn sowing methods mainly include drilling and dibbling. For dibbling, open holes according to the planned row spacing and plant spacing, apply fertilizer, drop in the seeds, and cover with soil; this method is mostly used for intercropped corn. Drilling uses mechanical sowing, has relatively high work efficiency, and is suitable for large-scale planting.Sowing depth: under normal circumstances, a sowing depth of 3-5 cm is appropriate, and sometimes the sowing depth can be appropriately increased depending on the situation.

The growth stages of corn are generally: seedling stage, three-leaf stage, jointing stage, large trumpet stage, tasseling stage, flowering stage (silking stage), grain-filling stage, milk-ripe stage, dough stage, and full-ripe stage. Corn consumes a lot of water. The corn seedling stage refers to the period from sowing to jointing, and it is a vegetative growth stage dominated by rooting and differentiation of stems and leaves. The growth characteristics of this stage are: the root system develops relatively quickly, but the growth of aboveground stems and leaves is relatively slow. For this reason, the central task of field management is to promote root development and cultivate strong seedlings, so as to meet the "four seedling" requirements of early seedlings, sufficient seedlings, uniform seedlings, and strong seedlings.

Glutinous corn

Corn ears are divided into female ears and male ears. The one at the top is the male ear (male flower), also called the tassel. The one on the stalk with silks (filaments) is the female ear, and the silks are the female flowers of corn. What is generally called a corn ear refers to the female ear, that is, the corn cob. A corn ear generally grows together with corn silks, and when silks are present, attention should be paid to pollination. Pollination directly affects the quality of ear formation, and whether it can grow successfully depends on it, so this is a very important part. What is worth noting here is that in the later stage, be sure to pay attention to corn ear rot, pest and disease control, field management, and pay attention to pruning branches and ventilation.
