As people attach more importance to food safety, the problem of excessive pesticide use on agricultural products is the first to bear the brunt. Highly toxic pesticides in particular are especially harmful to human health. Just a few days ago, 5 farmers who used pesticides banned by the state while growing cilantro were sentenced according to the law for the crime of producing and selling toxic food.

As of now, of the 39 highly toxic pesticides commonly used by farmers, 22 have already been withdrawn from the market, and the remaining ones will gradually be banned. A few days ago, an announcement was issued requiring 12 highly toxic pesticides to be fully banned within a set time limit.

These twelve pesticides are: aldicarb, phorate, and isocarbophos, to be fully banned in 2018; endosulfan and methyl bromide, to be fully banned in 2019; ethoprophos, omethoate, isofenphos-methyl, and aluminum phosphide, to be fully banned in 2020; chloropicrin, carbofuran, and methomyl, to be fully banned in 2022.

In other words, after the specified time, anyone who illegally uses the above highly toxic pesticides will face criminal punishment.

Behind the explicit ban is an indication of shortcomings in our country's agricultural technology. Why are many farmers willing to use highly toxic or even extremely toxic pesticides? One reason is that the vegetables they grow are for selling, and they do not eat them themselves. Another reason is that these pesticides take effect quickly and work well!

If farmers' cultivation techniques were improved, with scientific management and fertilization, and the problem of rampant pests and diseases were solved at the root, thereby achieving the goal of reducing or eliminating pesticide use, would that not be better?

Or, develop new biological pesticides for the prevention and control of pests and diseases. Remember one thing: every medicine has some toxicity, let alone pesticides. It is time to stop the cycle of mutual harm!
