Among the many plants, there is one that is abundantly produced in Fujian, Guangdong and Guangxi. That is Syzygium hancei. Also known as Hongchemu. As one of the rare red-leaf plants unique to the south, Syzygium hancei even carries the meaning of Hongchemu bringing good fortune. During its growth, red, orange and dark green appear in succession, and the colors are long-lasting. Below we introduce the Syzygium hancei plant and how to plant Syzygium hancei.

Introduction to Syzygium hancei

Before introducing the cultivation methods for Syzygium hancei, we should first know some basic facts about it. Syzygium hancei is one of the most common and eye-catching red-leaf tree species in Guangzhou. The new leaves change in color from green, pink, orange-yellow, orange-red to deep red. The plant shape is often pruned into a wide variety of forms such as cone, tower, sphere and cylinder, and the branch tips often look as if draped in colorful clothing, hence the trade name implying red and good fortune.

The south is green all year round. It is said that in order to add colorful-leaf tree species to southern cities, colorful-leaf plants such as the red-leaf photinia of the Rosaceae family were once introduced from the north, but because the temperature difference between day and night in the south is relatively small, the red color of the red-leaf photinia's new leaves fades quickly, and its colorful effect is not as beautiful as the form it grows into in the north. However, the Hongchemu introduced from Australia and Southeast Asia after 2003 is very tolerant of high temperatures, and its new leaves can maintain a brilliant bright red or orange-red color all year round, with an even better ornamental effect. Therefore it is highly anticipated, and more and more of it has been planted in recent years, adding a unique red-leaf landscape to the south.
