Yellow chives are formed when garlic chives are kept away from light, and they appear yellow because of their higher chlorophyll content. Their nutritional value is slightly lower than that of garlic chives, but yellow chives also have good health benefits. Yellow chives do not taste as pungent as garlic chives, and they have no particular restrictions, so most people can eat them.

Growing yellow chives, like growing other potted plants, first requires effort in choosing the soil. Because yellow chives are a perennial plant that can be harvested many times, the soil requirements are higher. We should choose fertile and airy soil to avoid soil compaction caused by long-term watering. It is generally recommended to use peat soil plus fermented organic fertilizer as the main growing medium for yellow chives. Mix the peat soil and fermented organic fertilizer at a ratio of 1:1.5, stir evenly, put it into a pot, water it well, and it is ready for use.

Then comes the selection of garlic chives: the quality of the garlic chive variety selected is the main factor affecting the taste of garlic chives. It is generally recommended to use red-rooted garlic chives to grow yellow chives. After selecting the garlic chives, they can be prepared. Keep about 3 cm from the root of the selected garlic chives, and cut off all the rest. Then transplant the trimmed garlic chive roots into the pot in clumps of 3-5 plants each.

Now that the garlic chives have been transplanted into the pot, we can next carry out light-blocking treatment. The planted garlic chive pots can be gathered together and covered with a shade net, or the planted yellow chives can be placed in a dark indoor spot. The premise is that the site must be dry and well ventilated, to avoid rot caused by the yellow chives being kept out of light for a long time and high humidity.

Harvesting: Keep the placed yellow chives under light-blocking conditions for about ten days, and once the garlic chives grow to about 20 cm, they can be harvested. Harvest by cutting close to the ground. Remember not to water for the first two days after harvesting, to prevent the wound from rotting and causing the plant to die.
