When is the best time to plant peonies? A detailed guide to autumn planting methods
Autumn is the best season for planting peonies. Let us teach you how to plant peony flowers!
1. Variety selection
If you want to grow potted peonies, you should choose varieties that are dwarf, highly adaptable, easy to cultivate and easy to bloom.
Recommended varieties suitable for potting include Zhao Fen, Luoyang Hong, Hu Hong, Lantian Yu, Qinglong Wo Mochi, Jizhua Hong, Meiren Hong, Luohan Hong, Ziyu and others.

2. Potted planting methods
1、
Before starting potting, first dig out the selected peony and let it dry for 1 to 2 days so the roots lose water and become soft. Potting from late September to early to mid-October gives better results.
2、
Use a 30 cm x 28 cm green-glazed sand pot, then place a tile at the bottom of the pot and spread 3 to 5 cm of small stones on it as a drainage layer. For the potting soil, it is best to use loose, fertile culture soil or a mixture of fully decomposed horse manure, garden soil and coarse sand. Then, when potting, first cut off dead branches, withered leaves and overly long roots, disinfect with a 1% copper sulfate solution, place it in the center of the pot, and press firmly with your hands while filling in soil.

3. Cultivation and management measures
1. Watering
After potting, water thoroughly once immediately, then begin closely observing the condition of the potting soil and adjust its moisture.
In summer, water during the cooler early morning hours. In autumn, it is best to water less so that secondary buds do not develop too early. Watering should be moderate; if you are a beginner, it is better to water less.
2. Fertilizing
You can apply sesame paste residue or soybean cake soaked in water and fermented; when fertilizing, dilute with water.
Before flowering, it is best to apply liquid fertilizer once a week. After the flowers fade, the focus is mainly on growing leaves, so apply light fertilizer.
3. Pest and disease control
In summer, with high temperatures and frequent rain, peonies are easily harmed by leaf spot disease, and can be protected by spraying Bordeaux mixture once.
Because the roots of peonies taste sweet, they are easily harmed by ants; use a 1000-fold dilution of dichlorvos for control.
4. Pruning
Prune overly dense branches in a timely manner according to conditions to improve ventilation.
