How to grow Malabar spinach: what farmers need to know about planting vegetables
In rural areas, farmers all grow some Malabar spinach. Malabar spinach is also called wood ear vegetable, rouge vegetable, or purple mallow. Because of its excellent quality and delicious taste, and because it is easy to cultivate and manage, most villagers in rural areas grow a little in their own vegetable plots. Malabar spinach can be sown successively from spring to early autumn, but spring sowing is still the main one.

Because Malabar spinach has a thick and hard seed coat and takes a long time to emerge, the seeds should be soaked for 1 to 2 days before sowing to encourage early germination and emergence. Malabar spinach can be sown directly or raised as seedlings. Before sowing or before transplanting, in combination with land preparation, apply more than 1000 kg of decomposed compost and 30 kg of compound fertilizer per mu. After plowing and raking level, make flat beds. When the seedlings have 4 to 5 leaves, thin them to a spacing of about 20 cm between plants. For seedling transplanting, transplant when the seedlings have 4 to 5 leaves, planting two rows per bed with a plant spacing of about 20 cm.

When the plants grow to 30 cm, pinch off the growing tips to encourage side branches. Malabar spinach has strong branching ability and vigorous stem and vine growth, so it generally needs trellising. A 2 m tall A-frame trellis can be used. When the side branches grow to about 20 cm, the tender shoots can be picked. During the growing period, tender leaves and shoots can be harvested successively. After trellising, according to the harvesting situation and plant growth, appropriately apply additional fertilizer and water. During the harvest period, remove flower stems promptly to help the shoots and leaves become plump and increase yield.
