In Chengmai, Hainan, there is a company that grows edible mushrooms from sugarcane!

"This is the oyster mushroom, crisp and fresh in taste, hailed as the finest of mushrooms," said Wang Zehong, the company's person in charge, breaking a mushroom off the growing bag as he recalled: "In the past, all the edible mushrooms on Hainan Island were shipped in from the mainland, which was costly. Once summer came, the temperatures were even higher, and the mushrooms did not travel well, so you would rarely see edible mushrooms on the market."

Seeing a business opportunity, Wang Zehong began trying to grow edible mushrooms locally.

"Unlike traditional edible mushroom cultivation, our growing bags are made from sugarcane bagasse," Wang Zehong said, grabbing a handful of sugarcane bagasse to explain: "Hainan is a sugarcane-growing region. We use the sugarcane bagasse left after sugar pressing, together with sawdust, and ferment them together to make the mushroom bags."

"We can produce mushrooms at any time, and different varieties of mushrooms. The mushrooms shipped in from the inland are nowhere near as fresh as ours!" Wang Zehong said with pride when talking about his mushrooms.

Now, Wang Zehong's fresh mushrooms are welcomed by the local market. Next, Wang Zehong is preparing to expand the factory building and continue to enlarge the scale of production.
